I've got copies of Match magazine from the late 70's early 80's using the term "Assist" so I think that blows your "Jonny Come Lately" allusions straight out of the water. An "Assist" is a pass or a cross that leads to a goal, the Adel one for DJ can rightly be called an assist, because it was perfect for DJ & much harder to miss than score. "Assist" as a footballing term has also been around for Donkeys years, I'd almost go so far as to suggest that Shaun Wright Phillips could have learnt to cross in the many years that the term "Assist" has been used in football circles / terminology, but I wouldnt go that far! |

If you can show me anywhere in one of your match mags or any footballing media where they say 'It was a great assist but the fella failed to score' I will say fair enough.
They might say it should of been an 'assist' but he missed it .Or wow that was nearly a great 'assist.
The clue is in the word .Assist ..He Assisted him in scoring
If he dont score what has he 'assisted' him in ..?

The point oz is trying to make is when we are in the pub talking football we dont ever say the word assist, its ball or cross. Put it this way, if i mentioned the word assist in my local, i wouldnt get out alive ;D |

"Assist" is a perfectly good word although it is normally used in the context of discussing player statistics rather than actual goals. How else would you describe a "contribution that sets up a goal", which is clearly a valuable contribution that can take many forms and deserves to have an associated statistic?
