QPR lost three of their last four Premier League games as they were relegated in May, finishing bottom of the division, including a 5-1 thrashing on the final day against Leicester. Now starting afresh in the Championship, they came unstuck again and deservedly so, against a Charlton side who grew into this game with impressive assurance. There were excuses. The QPR manager, Chris Ramsey, was giving debuts to four players, but so was his Charlton counterpart, Guy Luzon. However, QPR were playing with 11 men in name only, as Charlie Austin, the striker sought by Everton and Tottenham, failed to put in a performance worthy of his reputation. While Austin has become coveted, Charlton have a player striving to become that too, in the shape of Tony Watt. He scored the first goal and supplied the pass for Morgan Fox for the second having started on the substitutes’ bench. Instead the 17-year-old Karlan Ahearne-Grant was picked to partner Simon Makienok in attack. A dispute between Watt and Luzon’s assistants in training last week meant he had to bide his time. When he replaced Ahearne-Grant at half-time, he took his opportunity within seven minutes. A hopeful ball found him on the left but he attacked James Perch, cut on to his right foot to get past the right-back and beat Rob Green at the near post from eight yards. Luzon shed little light on why Watt had to start among the substitutes. The Israeli, delighted with his side’s performance, said: “What happened was between me and him but I know he had the quality to change the game. He accepted my decision, he didn’t have any choice.” Watt, a Scotland Under-21 international and former Celtic forward, also set up the second goal. His pass picked out Fox, who had made a 40-yard dash to join the attack from left-back, and he beat Green with a low shot from 20 yards. Five QPR players who started in that game against Leicester began here. Austin was, to the surprise of some, among the quintet. It had been assumed by this stage of the summer he would have left, with the west London club hoping to get £15m. He did not do his highlights reel any favours with this display. Advertisement Ramsey said Austin had worked hard and any transfer was out of his hands. “It would be a big loss for us, it’ll be a massive gain for anyone who gets him. I don’t get involved in selling players and if the owners get the right money he’ll be moving on.” Austin, speaking on the radio afterwards, said he would happily keep playing for QPR until told otherwise. One bicycle kick from short-range and a defensive block represented his best moments. He might want to attribute a shank from 30 yards to summer rust, as the ball trundled out for a throw-in and Ramsey took him off before the end, claiming he had detected a slight injury. His team-mate Tjaronn Chery, one of the debutants, signed from Groningen for £1.25m, had a better game and with six minutes in the first half remaining, he let fly with a powerful volley, saved by Nick Pope one-handed. But that shot disguised the balance of play as Charlton gradually found more time on the ball and that trend was confirmed by Watt’s goal. “It took the stuffing out of us,” said Ramsey. After Fox’s goal, Johann Gudmundsson hit the crossbar with a wonderful, dipping free-kick from 25 yards. But Ramsey did not need that to go in to know he has much work to do, with or without Austin. www.theguardian.com/football/2015/aug/08/charlton-athletic-queens-park-rangers-championship-match-report

Can never judge based on one single game...But this was WITH Austin and Phillips...
And besides subjective comments, this hurts team confidence - just like a win would have given us a mountain of confidence.
So I'd say Yeovil does become important just for morale

They said their first goal was down to an insperational substitution. This is Ramseys achilles heel, as he may be a great coach, but as he proved last year, he is clueless as a manger.

Yep, I will start off with pretty average performance, deserved nothing and got nothing. Defence will look fragile for weeks as I have been stating for a month or so. The only way I see us winning games is outscoring opponents as we will leak and leak and we didnt even score today against a team that will finish mid table at best. Clint Hill should not be starting games in the Champs or Prem, even though he is a smashing fella and leader. Charlie doesnt really want to be with us any more. Feel free to say im way off the mark after one game but we got defenders in to late after a shabby pre season and it will weeks before we fire as a unit, just like Fulham did last year. I will stick with my 15 th at the minute. Ramsey was lucky to keep the job as his role was to keep us up. Another few games against bang average opposition like this and the pressure will build and build. Warnock and Rednapp started the Division all guns blazing , solid unit. Lets not forget we had Austin and Phillips in that team, 15 million pounds of talent? Could easily have been three nil or more. Poor start

It was a poor start for sure, and I agree with several of your early points about the defence taking some time to learn to play together. I also agree that Hill is too old to start and Austin seems like he doesn't want to be here. Other than that, I am going to give this team time to gel and see where it goes from there. Let's give it a few games before we start to panic.

I wont panic Corndog as my expectations this season are bottom half not top half and just cant understand why some may think we could finish in top 2 ?
But I will still post thoughts as I see them and this wasnt the start or even performance we hoped for.
Charlton had a reserve goalie in and there Leading scorer Ventekle out injured but still put two past our rough defence .
We have a bit of a mix and match team and an unexperienced Manager.
That to me dont say top 2 .
Before all the well we are a new team/relegated team comments come out, Burnley got a good point at Leeds and Hull won, so it is possible to start off well.

Where did I say I was expecting top 2? I was thinking more mid table, possibly top ten but not quite making the playoffs.

Charlton Athletic 2-0 Queens Park Rangers
Charlton AthleticCharlton Athletic Queens Park RangersQueens Park Rangers 2 0 FT Game Details GameCast Lineups and Stats Charlton pair Tony Watt and Morgan Fox ensured QPR crashed to a 2-0 defeat on their return to the Sky Bet Championship.
The visitors, relegated from the Premier League, found life difficult back in the second tier and were outwitted in their opening-day London derby.
Substitute Watt made an instant impact by scoring just seven minutes following his introduction at the start of the second half. And Fox scored his first Addicks goal to kill off QPR for good on a poor afternoon for Chris Ramsey's side at The Valley.
There were eights debutants on show - four for each side - but one standout name at QPR remained in Charlie Austin.
The striker could make a move back to the Premier League this month, as he continues to be linked with various top-flight clubs.
Austin served notice that he will be a major threat at this level when he shrugged off Alou Diarra before firing just wide in the ninth minute.
Austin sent another warning out moments later when his deflected shot beat Nick Pope but not the Charlton goalkeeper's right-hand post.
A new-look Charlton side remain a work in progress and that showed in the early exchanges. They initially relied too heavily on the long ball to giant Denmark striker Simon Makienok, who stands at 6ft 7ins, and the final ball often let them down in the first half.
It was QPR who looked the far more likely to open their account. Tjaronn Chery curled a free-kick wide but he went the closest of anyone before the break to breaking the deadlock in the 38th minute.
The Dutch midfielder found room to drive a 25-yard shot that forced Pope into an acrobatic save to keep the scores level.
Another player tipped for a Premier League return is Matt Phillips. The QPR winger almost struck inside the opening minutes of the second half as his shot was palmed out by Pope.
It was all QPR but Charlton took the lead against the run of play via Watt in the 52nd minute.
The Scottish striker stepped inside and his low shot had sufficient power to sneak past goalkeeper Rob Green at his near post.
QPR were rattled by conceding such a soft goal and they were fortunate not to fall further behind in the 65th minute when an unmarked Patrick Bauer headed over.
Watt then saw a penalty appeal waved away after Karl Henry appeared to haul the Scot down.
But Charlton extended their lead in the 72nd minute when Fox thumped home from long range.
The left-back was given space before he drilling past a helpless Green. QPR knew the game was up and replacing the jaded Austin late on suggested they had given up the ghost.
There was still time for Charlton winger Johann Berg Gudmundsson to rattle the crossbar with a late free-kick as hosts cruised home.

It would be nice now and again if Rangers weren't so predictable , I know it's only the first game but such a disappointment ! Fear Ramsey is still out of his depth , give it a few weeks hope I'm wrong .

Miserable or right?
We are so oredictable. Even our head coach was telling every other manager his tactics of how he wants to play on Thursday

First 20 minutes we looked ok, Austin and Phillips never really in it and Austin at one stage after a miss held his hamstring and then carried on for another 15 minutes.
Perch started well and then made mistakes both goals coming down that side.
I thought Luongo sand Chery did well along with Mackie. Konchesky very worrying if we have to rely on him and why the hell a big lump like Jay Emmanuel-Thomas comes on and was taking the corners is beyond me.
A lot of work to do and most of it as predicted is to do with defence. :-(
worrying
