Hope it goes pear shaped Celtic open Hooper talks Lennon hoping to fend off any summer interest in striker Last Updated: May 22, 2012 7:44pm Celtic have started talks over a new contract for Gary Hooper and intend to resist any summer bids for the SPL's top scorer. Hooper netted 29 goals for the Bhoys this season and has been a prolific scorer since moving to Parkhead from Sc**thorpe Unitedtwo years ago. He was the subject of bids from Southampton during the January transfer window as his former Sc**thorpe boss Nigel Adkins sought to take Hooper to St Mary's. Southampton are understood to be preparing a fresh swoop for the 24-year-old after clinching promotion to the Premier League after finishing second in the Championship. Happy However, Celtic boss Neil Lennon is determined to fend off any interest in Hooper and confirmed initial discussions have been held regarding a new deal. Lennon told STV: "We had a preliminary meeting with his agent last week and it was very cordial. "It went very well and we made it clear that we want Gary to stay. "Gary likes it here and he's happy here. He's had such a good season and he's such a good player that no doubt there'll be clubs in for him, but we'll try and resist all offers that come our way. www1.skysports.com/football/news/12691/7772424/Celtic-open-Hooper-talks

If you were offered the same job somewhere else but you were paid way more would you take it?? If he signed for us he would get the chance to partner Cisse or Zamora, at Saints it would be Sharp or Lambert. Quite a difference.

By James Nursey Comments 22 May 2012 22:30 De Jong time no see! Mark Hughes wants to bring Man City midfielder to QPR De Jong was only a sub in City’s last four matches of the season and his contract is up next summer Nigel de Jong: heading to QPR? QPR boss Mark Hughes wants to be reunited with Nigel de Jong this summer. Hughes was in charge at Man City when he signed the Dutch midfield hardman in January 2009 for £18million from Hamburg. De Jong has since made 135 appearances for City - including 21 this season as they won the Premier League. Mark Hughes: wearing De Jong trousers Julian Finney But De Jong was only a sub in City’s last four matches of the season and his contract is up next summer. The Dutch ace can expect to find competition even stiffer next term with boss Roberto Mancini set to strengthen again. That has alerted Hughes at Loftus Road who has cash to spend after keeping Rangers up. www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/qpr-want-to-sign-manchester-city-844036

Yo Harls, it's De Jong not De Yong!!!
De Jong plays in a similar role to Diakite.
From reading that article it looks like 2+2=5.

Just thought of another young goalkeeper we could go for. Sven Ulreich is a 23 year old keeper for Stuttgart, very highly rated in the Bundesliga but has recently signed a contract extension so he would probably cost quite a bit. oi Rory you said I couldn't have a german

Agree that they are both defensive midfielders and both possess good passing games, however Diatike does have more flair and pace than De Jong and could be utilised in a more attacking role. If the club did acquire De Jong I can see someone like Derry being used only as a sub.

Warburton QPR eye defender swoop By Paul Warburton May 24 2012 QPR have vowed to complete all new transfers well before the August deadline – and avoid the horrors of last season. The Chronicle understands chairman Tony Fernandes and co are putting in the groundwork this week for a frenetic summer of transfer activity, with a centre-half top of the priority list following the departures of Fitz Hall and Danny Gabbidon. The club was severely hampered when only allowed to make a raft of signings at the last minute in August 2011 after Fernandes finally wrested control at Rs. In a moment worthy of a West End farce, Anton Ferdinand was required to sprint up the office stairs at Loftus Road with pen in hand seconds before the midnight deadline. The early upheaval and lack of earlier signings saw backs to the wall all the way to final day of the season when Bolton’s draw at Stoke secured Rs Premier League status by the skin of their teeth. www.fulhamchronicle.co.uk/london-qpr/2012/05/24/qpr-eye-defender-swoop-82029-31035324/?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter#ixzz1vm4nbrVW

Seems an awful lot of money! Especially for a young goalie MAIL QPR join United in race to sign Birmingham's teenage keeper Butland QPR are planning a £6million bid for England Under 21 goalkeeper Jack Butland which could lead to current No 1 Paddy Kenny joining Leeds. Manchester United are also tracking the 19-year-old Birmingham No 2, who spent last season on loan at League Two Cheltenham. Fulham striker Andrew Johnson is also a target for QPR. www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2149542/QPR-Birmingham-keeper-Jack-Butland.html

Heard good things about that guy. Meant to be Joe Harts replacement when he gets older.
Dunno if he's worth £6m though, hasn't had much experience. Would rather have Foster

QPR LINE UP TOTTENHAM CROCK JERMAINE JENAS TO FILL JOEY BARTON'S BOOTS www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=2&sqi=2&ved=0CBEQqQIwAQ&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.dailystar.co.uk%2Ffootball%2Fview%2F253141%2FQPR-line-up-Tottenham-crock-Jermaine-Jenas-to-fill-Joey-Barton-s-boots%2F&ei=0QO_T6uTA8bg8AOL3rT2Cg&usg=AFQjCNGrPPVnrr5EPDpLDOkN5ZdCb2tFdAQPR are lining up £4m Jermaine Jenas to replace shamed skipper Joey Barton. Barton was hit with a 12-game ban by the FA on Wednesday after his red card disgrace at Manchester City. The controversial midfielder will now miss the first three months of the next campaign. With QPR looking into sacking Barton, boss Mark Hughes is ready to make a move for the Tottenham midfielder. Jenas, 29, signed a one-year extension to his Spurs deal in March, tying him to the club until 2014. But he has fallen down the White Hart Lane pecking order and is currently without a squad number. Jenas was loaned out to Aston Villa for the season last summer. But he had an injury-hit nightmare spell at Villa Park and returned to Spurs after rupturing his Achilles in December. When he regains fitness, Jenas faces a huge fight for regular first-team football at Spurs, something Sparky will be able to offer. Manchester City hardman Nigel de Jong, who Hughes signed when he was in charge at the Etihad Stadium, is another midfielder on his list of potential Barton replacements. Barton was handed separate four-game bans for elbowing Carlos Tevez, kicking Sergio Aguero and trying to headbutt Vincent Kompany in Rangers’ 3-2 final-day defeat. Rangers owner Tony Fernandes and Hughes are due to meet to discuss Barton’s future next week. Coach Marc Bircham reckons Barton could be loaned out next season to a foreign club. Bircham said: “When they first come back, the gaffer will sit down with Joey and probably the owners. “After the internal investigation, they will sit down and see where they are going. “You never know, you can get loaned out abroad to get games under your belt. That is maybe an option the club might look to.” Hughes is also ready to reignite his interest in £5m Birmingham keeper Ben Foster, with Paddy Kenny expected to leave in the summer for Leeds. The former England man had an excellent season on loan at West Brom.

Goal.com's summary of our transfer window:
What they need Surviving their first top-flight season since 1995-96 by the skin of their teeth would have been a mighty relief for owner Tony Fernandes. A huge investment in players during both transfer windows just about paid off in the end as Mark Hughes's side turned Loftus Road into a fortress and consigned Bolton to Championship football next season.
It could all have been so different, though, and with plans for a new stadium in the pipeline, Fernandes will be eager to avoid another relegation dogfight at all costs. First up the club must resolve the future of disgraced club captain Joey Barton - banned for 12 matches at the start of the new campaign after his red mist at the Ethihad Stadium - although Hughes will do well to find anyone willing to match his reported £60,000-a-week wages.
Assuming he stays, the priority will be to shore up a leaky defence and provide more firepower for strikers Bobby Zamora and Djibril Cisse, with reinforcements also required in central midfield to replace the ageing legs of Shaun Derry.
Who's coming? QPR have become the darlings of the tabloids' transfer gossip sections since Fernandes arrived last August, with countless players linked with a move to west London. In particular, Wigan forward Victor Moses is the major target for Hughes but he faces a fight with several other sides to lure the Nigerian international, as is the case with South African Steven Pienaar.
A replacement for goalkeeper Paddy Kenny will also be on the wishlist of the former Manchester City boss, with West Ham's out-of-contract Rob Green the prime candidate. Elsewhere, a quality central defender must be a priority given the reliance on veteran Clint Hill and Hughes will probably turn to the continent having missed out on signing Brazilian Alex back in January.
He has also been linked with a move for Dutch enforcer Nigel de Jong from his old club in a move that would certainly add some much-needed solidity in front of the defence.
Who's going? A number of players signed at the last minute by former boss Neil Warnock last August may be surplus to requirements under Hughes but, like Barton, some exorbitant salaries will be a major stumbling block. Moroccan Adel Taarabt is constantly linked with a move back to Europe and, despite some decent displays towards the tail-end of the season, Hughes may decide to let the former Spurs player leave this summer.
A whole host of players in what was one of the Premier League's most bloated squads have already been shown the door at the end of the season, with the departures of centre-backs Danny Gabbidon and Fitz Hall highlighting the need for reinforcements in that area.
Budget £30 million

Goalie and central defender are the two most important signings for me.
Hughes may well go continental for a central defender. Good to see someones at least linking us with Ben Foster, even if its unlikely that will happen.

I think we need wingers that can cross a football, Traore is possibly the best we have in the squad at this; "pure wide play" but I think there are question marks about other aspects of his game / where to play him etc.
A centre back ( Kaspars Gorkks is good )
If Mark Hughes thinks we need a goalkeeper then I go along with that as long as its not Robert Green.
I think we need to do some good business in Europe & beyond & not get stuck with the overpriced English crap that we ended up with last season.
Adam Johnson on loan for a year ?! Why not ?! Man City owe us a favour & then some!

I would have thought West Brom have first dibs on him, Rory.
Haven't seen any players linked to us from my usual sources so not Verm confident on Foster yet.
