Hi - Really impressed with all the History supplied by Bushman. Another game where Rodney starred but is never mentioned was at the end of the 1966-67 season.
On the Friday evening before the Cup Final Young England always played the full England team as a curtain raiser. This particular game was played at Highbury and (if I remember correctly) Young England won 5-0 with Rodney scoring two. I think Roger Morgan might also have played. This was against an England team containing most of the star names ( I am sure Bobby Moore played). I also think that Vic Mobley played for the Young England team and was un-beatable, which was why my father was pleased when we signed him until he saw how slow he had become.
Can you imagine the headlines if this happened today ?
Does anyone have anymore information on this game and are my re-collections correct ? Thanks

I went to that game and I have the prog somewhere stashed away. I will see if I can find it.

Hi - Thank You for the information. Very interesting to see how strong the England team that was selected. Also interesting to see that none of the Young England team actually went on to become regular's in the full England team.

Never has been any doubt in my mind that Rodney was a better player than Bowles, although I would not want to denigrate Stan's considerable skills. In his playing days Rodney was very laid back and modest although unfortunately these days he seems to be struggling under the weight of his huge ego.
Mark Lazarus still rates Rodney as one of the best ever and has told me on a number of occasions how he enjoyed playing alongside him.

What a great thread, such passion. This is what QPR is all about for me.
Rather than sitting here looking wistfully down the barrel of my approaching 50th, I, for the first time in God knows how many years, actually wish I was older and so could have seen Rodney player for the Rs.

Marsh was QPR everything good that's happened to our club stems from him.

If I would want to win a game against a top team, I might prefer Bowles over Marsh
If I wanted to Enjoy a game/marvel at skill - and hope this would be the game that Marsh would turn it on, I'd pick Marsh
Marsh was more "Mercurial" - Some games yes. Some games no. But when yes, Beautiful to watch
But in all honesty, it's like comparing two just totally amazing things: Be lucky/were lucky to have either. And to have both: Brilliance

All entitled to our opinion matey but you really hit the nail on the head when you said you never saw Rodney live. A wonderful sight to behold even when he was not scoring. Pure magic. I did not miss many of his games in those happy times.

Excellent articles and pics. Thanks Bushy, you're as big a legend amongst fans as Rodney was on the field.

I am 58 and been going to LR since 1967. Rodney was already playing when I started going and was great to watch. So too was Stan. The difference is that Rodney made QPR famous and a club to watch. He helped them from 3rd div to 1st. Without him they would not have made it (even though we had some other good players then, Lazarus and Keen to name but two). I don't think we can compare as they were two different teams, but what is clear is that neither team would have been as good to watch without their respective talisman.

When Marsh signed March 26 1966 and scored 8 goals in 16 apps at the back end off the 1965-66 season. Alec Stock knew he had signed someone very special.
