I LOVE Rodney Marsh...and I LOVE Stan Bowles.
Rodney Marsh is a moderator of this site.
He's every QPR old timer's hero - including very much me: The one QPR man I'd most like to meet
I was at Loftus Road for Marsh's last QPR game...And i was at Loftus Road for Bowles first QPR game. (In fact I was at Loftus Road for when Bowles was playing for Carlisle at QPR)
But an objective assessment of Marsh vs Bowles finds pluses and minuses for both.
Bowles played for QPR at the highest levels... Marsh played almost all his QPR time in the lower divisions Marsh was THE star of the QPR Team...Bowles was one of a number of England Internationals.
But I saw Marsh in games when he was totally controlled or whatever reason didn't feel like playing...I didn't see that with Bowles
And as for tackling: I saw Bowles tackle. I'm not sure I saw that with Marsh.
Now I'm certainly not saying Bowles was better than Marsh. I'm not saying Rodney wasnt ROD..NEE.
I'm remember being totally devestated when Marsh was sold to Manchester City in that sad March 1972 TRansfer Deadline day
But having Rodney Marsh in the team meant the team played around MArsh...It was notable that after selling Marsh we went 21 games undefeated. Now that's impressive
ANd I could find flaws with Bowles too: Too temperamental; too many transfer requests; etc, etc.
But basically QPR were blessed from 1966-1979 with having two geniuses playing for them. And it says so much about England team selection that they got so few games between them.

I agree with you. But Rodney played at the very highest level at Fulham before QPR & Man City after he had taken a 3rd division team to the top and won a cup. Two years after leaving the safety net of the players around him, Stan was in the 3rd division at Brentford. As for consistency, that's not something geniuses are know for ie Georgie Best. But I really don't think the '67 team got the credit they deserved & their should be a memorial to Mike Keen. And I assure you, Stan re writes history & is obsessed with Rodney. Rodney, really doesn't give a Sh** about Bowles, and out of the two, Rodney is by far the more respectful and grateful to fans. Everytime I arrange a meet with him , he's there...... NOT SO with Stan... that's from experience. Photo - 'THE KING & i' me & Rodney. Attachments:

Rather than arguing you, I'm going to simply say: Marsh and Bowles Two fabulous players. Both made massive contributions to QPR. I wish both were in the QPR team. And the 1967 Team were fabulous - as was Mike Keen. And to make you (and me and others) hopefully happy - Another Rodney Remembers, fromlast year www.rodneymarsh.net/documents/RM_Blackpool0001.pdf

I first saw Rodney play against Doncaster Rovers, 17th September 1966 and we had a lucky win. 6 nil. From that day until today, he's the finest player that has worn our shirt. Watching Rodney play football was like watching a world class Magician. Stan's the man...............but Rod is God.

I saw Danny Maddix playing for Spuds in a reserve fixture against the hoops at Loftus Road in 1985. He was quality even then.

Sorry folks. Didn't get a chance to post yesterday, but the 11th was GODNEY'S Birthday. If you want to post any Birthday messages on here, I will gladly paste them and mail them to Rod who's just got back to Florida. I also arranged for Rod to sign with all star signings, so you know you are getting the real thing! (I have seen so many fakes on E-bay!) A lovely, large, glossy montage of Rod in '67 and England kit has been made and titled ' Rodney Marsh- Maverick'. It comes with a COA + photo of him signing the posters, so you know you have the real thing. The actual photo is not on the site yet, but keep your eye on the link below. www.collectormanialondon.com/Rod, is also doing a signing session for all star in London in November...... I will keep you posted. Attachments:

Many Happy Returns Rodney. I probably saw more of his games than many people on this board and also Stan Bowles games. Make no mistake about it, Rodney was by far the better and more committed club man. He was a god to us all. Without exception he was for me the best player I have ever seen anywhere, not just in blue and white hoops. At the time Rodney was crying after the League Cup Final I was standing on the terraces sobbing with him from the sheer emotion and joy of the occasion and there were not many dry eyes around us. A sensational day, the likes of which we shall never see again. Oh, sure, we may well get into a cup final of some sort again. We may have great results and successes in the future but this match cannot be compared with anything. I don't say this as a form of gloating over our younger members here but you have missed something very special in Rodney. He also had times for the supporters. I remember when he was injured on one occasion he sat immediately behind me in the Ellerslie Road stand and was happy to chat throughout the game. If there is one good thing about being in my mid 70s it is that I WAS THERE in Rodney's time and I am just so grateful for that. Must stop there before I start blubbing again.

Yes - Great memories. Probably added 5,000 to the gate at home games. Also one of the few players I have seen who could win a game on his own. Does anyone remember a FA Cup game against Charlton - probably about 1970 - 1971 ish. It was at the Valley and we were 2 goals down very quickly. I remember we had a corner and the Charlton fans started singing "Rodney is a fairy". Within a short period he had scored two goals and then in the second half laid on the winner for Frank Clark. We probably sold him at the right time as it then enabled the younger players (Francis, Busby etc) to express themselves more and take more responsibility. But it still gave me pleasure when seeing him play for Man City. I have a bald patch now where he once patted me on the head. Is that god -like or just that I am getting old ??

Welcome billericayr and a good first post to start with. That was a special day at Charlton with the sound of ROD-NEEE, ROD-NEEE at the Valley. We were down 2-0 thanks to Vic Mobley. The third goal was a quick break as Marsh drew Burns the Charlton goalkeeper out of his goal, everyone expected him to get his hat-trick but he squared it for Frank Clarke to put the ball into an empty net. Happy Birthday Rodney.

The thing about Rodney though (unfortunately) was that he didn't always turn it on. I remember another game also against charlton when he was marked out of the game. (I can't remember the name of the player - Was it Reid?)...
And against Chelsea in the QF FA Cup, Ron Harris kept him quiet.
Always felt that for his own good (not for ours), if he'd gone to a top First Division Club far earlier in his career.
But luckily for us, that didnt happen

happy birthday Rod, thanks for the memories, they last a lifetime, probably scrawled Rodney on every desk at school, idolised him. Was at Charlton too, one of the best games I've seen. Rodney was the difference that day, sheer brilliance
