The Hungarian national team of the 50's, nicknamed 'The Magical Magyars', are regarded as one of the greatest teams in the history of soccer. When they played West Germany in the 1954 Final, Hungary were unbeaten in 29 matches in four years (including the Olympic Games). Their undefeated streak crashed when they lost 3-2 to the Germans.

I don,t know if this record still stands, but the highest score in any World Cup qualifer was 13-0, the score by which New Zealand beat Fiji in 1981.  |

I believe it may have recently been beaten.
Steve Sumner for the All Whites scored against Scotland (Scotland won 5-2) in the 1982 World Cup Finals and became the first player from Oceania to score in an WC Finals.
