The longest standing ground record amongst senior clubs was set at Valley Parade, Bradford, when 39,146 saw City beat Burnley in the F.A. Cup. Bradford went on to win the Cup that season beating Newcastle United in the final after a replay. This was the first time that the present trophy, the third, was put up for the competition. The first Cup was stolen in 1895 and the second was presented to Lord Kinnaird in recognition of his 21 years as President of the F.A.

Death of John Costlby at the age of 70. He played inside-left for Blackburn Olympic in the Cup Final of 1883 when Etonians were beaten 2-1 and the Cup went north for the first time. Costlby scored the winner in extra time.

Joe Payne, Luton Town centre-forward, transferred to Chelsea. As a wing-half he was always unsure of his place in the first team until he was tried at centre-forward in April 1936 against Bristol Rovers. He rewarded the gamble by scoring ten goals in a 12-0 victory. The following season he scored 55 goals in the Third Division South and went on England's summer tour where he played against Finland getting two of England's eight. When War broke out he had scored 104 League goals in 108 games. Payne was also a prolific scorer in wartime soccer and appeared in Chelsea's two War Cup finals at Wembley in 1944 and 1945. After the War he was suffering from a recurrent knee problem and was exchanged for West Ham United's goalkeeper Harry Medhurst. After 6 goals in 10 matches he gave up the first class game.
