McClaren get his excuses in early.... Surely WBA was the toughest seeing they beat us 7-1 lol STEVE McClaren believes Saturday’s match with Wigan Athletic will be his sides toughest test yet. The Latics have adjusted well to their return to the Sky Bet Championship collecting seven points from their opening four matches. That included a 3-0 win against a favoured Stoke City side on Wednesday evening. We need to give monumental effort. They will be coming here buzzing and confident. And after winning League One last season, McClaren isn’t surprised to see them replicating the likes of Millwall and Sheffield United from this time last year. “It’s going to be a tough game,” the 57-year-old told www.qpr.co.uk. “We’ve had tough matches but this is probably the toughest of the season so far. “We need to give monumental effort. They will be coming here buzzing and confident but we have to knock that out of them and assert ourselves to get those first points on the board. “You saw last season, with Millwall and Sheffield United, that getting a team together in League One and winning promotion breeds a winning mentality. “Wigan are a great example of that, they’ve added some good players to the squad and proved against Stoke City they are a good team.” Rangers will be buoyed by the double acquisition of Tomer Hemed and Nahki Wells ahead of Wigan’s visit to Loftus Road. The striking duo arrived on loan from Premier League sides Brighton and Hove Albion and Burnley respectively on Thursday. And with QPR still winless following the R’s midweek defeat against Bristol City, McClaren is looking for character from his hurting squad.

The Wigan perspective! ". Looked like a push in Chey Dunkley's back, but the goal stands as Tomer Hemed opens his account on his debut. (1-0)

A win & a clean sheet, can't complain about that. Surely Lumley will keep the goalkeeper slot after that. I'd play Hemed & Wells on Tues, they need to get their match fitness up.
Still need to work on the defence, we were carved up a few times from what I've heard. With any luck, we'll bring in a CB by Friday.

We were better today with Lumley playing a key role of being in the right place for a number of Wigan efforts, making a couple of excellent saves and being more commanding from crosses. He was also in the face of Wigan players so that bodes well. His distribution is a bit suspect but for me he played himself into the side. Defensively whilst nothing conceded which is great we still look suspect from crosses and set pieces and Wigan on another day would surely have converted one of their chances. In midfield Luongo still seems off the pace, Scowan and Freeman did their job. The new forwards showed more composure on the ball. Were they brilliant? No but at least we looked like scoring and these guys are not going to be match sharp so there should be better to come. Eze is a youngster with potential and will need to be carefully used to make sure he develops to his potential. Perhaps rest him for the Bristol game.
It was great to get the 3 points and a clean sheet but this will be a long season.

In a much better mood walking down the Uxbridge Road in the sun.
Interesting shape today. When I heard the team, I unexpectedly presumed 4-4-2 but it shifted at different times. On paper it was a 4-3-3 with Wells on the right of the three. At other times (more often out of possession) we shifted to Hemed and Wells up top as a two, Eze and Freeman pushed wide behind them and Luongo and Scowen behind them.
Biggest difference was that now the ball actually stuck up the other end of the pitch and Hemed was critical to that. Knock on effect appeared to be that midfielders had an 'out' to their moves. Freeman and Eze cut less frustrated figures, knowing their lofted balls had an outlet - that it was worth pushing up cos Hemed so frequently controlled and laid off the ball back to them (I.e. how the system is supposed to work). It wasn't amazing but it was enough. Early days with the two new loanees.
First half we didn't look much better or worse than the first half of the last couple of games. Wigan pushed with a front three, both teams felt each other out. Our first goal was exactly the kind you need when you're low on confidence- an acrobatic poach amongst a big mess in the penalty area.
Lumley made a superb (if unorthodox) save from a long range effort and it did wonders for his confidence. Some errant kicks but very vocal and assured. He was even marshalling the linesman to keep in line with the last man, which I've never seen before..!
Some hairy moments towards the end. Some poor clearances but some very tasty blocks from us, we definitely dug in to grind the win out.
Anyway, just great to see three points and a win. We really needed that and deserved it. Also really good to see Leistner and Scowen gathering the players together at the end so they all clapped the fans. Uuu Rs.

Just back, fantastic ground out win. We needed to replace Ingram, so much better with Lumley. Much better second half , like Bow said very nervy first half, rode our luck first half big time.
Bidwell,Lynch, Scowen did great today. Bidwell was immense. Luongo was very poor in the first half but second half came into it a bit more.
New guys considering hadn’t played any matches were great. Wells just keeps trying and running, think these two will be fantastic for us.
Ref must have came from Lancashire, about five times game Wigan free kicks when they never were in a month of Sundays.
Was great to get a win on juniors 21st .
Big game away at Brum next weekend, love to get at least a point but so pleased for everyone at the Club to get that 1st win finally UR’s

Just seen the highlights - at the game it was hard to work out what happened with the goal, but it just looked 'untidy'. But I can now see why Cook said it should have been disallowed. Lynch fouled in the build up. Just shows such fine margins. Thought the ref fell for all the soppy fouls today and yet he missed the most important one. Cook said that the lino said it was a foul as well. But against Bristol City, I thought the luck did run against us. They scored with their first real shot and the third was a very kind pinball for them. Think that for the first half against Rovers on Tuesday he should recall Kakay, Baptiste Wszolek and Chair (for Angel, Lynch Freeman and Luongo). I would like to see Smythe get a run out, but it looks like he will be out on loan by then (based on Shteve's post match comments). The highlights do shown that Wigan probably had more chances that City did on Thursday.....but a win is a win! Build that confidence

Just a few thoughts from today:-
- On Tuesday the team received boo's at half time & today were clapped off at that time. Yet, I thought we played better in the first half against Bristol City than we did today!
- Leistner & Lynch played a lot closer to each other today & looked better defenders for it.
- Although Lumley has a long way to go, he exudes more confidence than Ingram does. I also think he is more vocal & our players listen to him. The most pleasing part of his performance was how he came & punched the ball clear from Wigan's last free kick.
- Wells workrate was superb & I thought he was easily the best player on the pitch.
- I enjoyed how the players showed their relief & celebrated at the end of the match. Especially how they all went & congratulated Lumley.
- Please can we stop giving away these stupid free kicks! Not that they caused us much danger today, but that will not always be the case & most could have been avoided.
The wine is tasting good tonight!

Good win, the right acquisitions in attack and a little luck in defending.
I think Lumley will keep his place for the next league game but Ingram still has a part to play this season.
