Unchanged starting line-up. Baptiste on the bench but no Sylla. Is he on the way out ?! No Hall or Perch either.

The power strike force that Ollie seems to back for the last 12 months is about as effective as a condom with a pin hole. New young players getting a rare go are exempt from criticism. Well done Ollie. Everyone has been screaming out for one for 12 months.

Let's consign this one to history and let's bring on Bristol and maybe a decent Championship striker!

Burton losing to Foolham 6-0, maybe the 2nd in our big two game win streak wasn’t so impressive.

Tactically this was pretty dire, seeing Lynch playing as centre forward after 35 minutes was testimony to something not being quite right.
Jack Robinson was our most dangerous goal scoring threat and that in itself tells a story..
Our forwards are toothless. Washington is frightened of shooting and miss places passes, Oteh was understandably overawed by the whole situation and it came as no surprise that he didn't come out for the second half. Osayi Samuel flatters to deceive and Matt Smith is really just a lump with very limited ability. Trouble is when he comes up against similarly proportioned centre halves, his lack of true ability shows and his height isn't that great an advantage. He also seems not to be able to run.
Whilst for the first 20 minutes there was little to differentiate the sides, once the goals went in, there was never any coming back. There did look to be a shoe-in penalty turned down and that might have sparked a recovery but there was always the feeling that Boro had this game in the bag and could have stepped up a gear.
I suspect the stats will say we had plenty of possession but I don't see the logic in playing 30 passes that ends up back with Smithies who hoofs it to a Boro player. Pointless. The possession we did have was passive. There was no probing, there was no intelligence about attacking.
The midfield had an off day, Freeman seemed to have the wrong boots on, his passing was off and he just wasn't his normal self today. The Scowan substitute was unexpected.
If we play like this and I remember the terrible run we went on last season around this time then we will struggle. I hope we have enough points not to be drawn into a nail biting relation battle but performances like this from the team and management show that any complacency hoping we have enough points is misplaced. This side is not good enough.

Normal service resumes then, no more to say really.
5 wins and 2 draws needed from 18, seems easy unless we go on another Ollie crazy.

Thanks M/B for a critical analysis. I too worry about team competency. still I think we'll get enough points here and there to stay in this division.

Great summary MB.
Middlesbrough have a Premier League Manager, a strong squad and have spent a lot of money, they also have a number of players that are worthy of Prem status. All of this was evident yesterday, they were quite simply better than us. We huffed and puffed but we just didn’t have the quality or the pace to find a way through once they scored.
Bamford found space and was able to pick passes in midfield, we on the other hand found ourselves with little choice but to turn back and as MB said put the ball back to Smithies. Matt Smith needs to be more aggressive at times and Washington who plays off the shoulder got little change from their centre backs. They were very good at closing down the man on the ball but we were also guilty of far too many unforced errors yesterday.
Bidwell is a hard working, tough little nut but going forward he just doesn’t have that trick or turn of pace that full backs require in the modern game. I am genuinely pleased that we have some decent youngsters on the fringes but whether it is Chair, Eze, Oteh or Furlong I am not sure that any of them are game changers, which is precisely what we needed yesterday. I did think Robinson and possibly Furlong were the pick of a poor bunch.
Given the drive took twice as long as usual and the weather was crap, a disappointing day all round.

Think we lost to a team that will get promoted at the end of the season. We matched them until the first goal, but never really worked the keeper after that. Thought that the guy in 'Q' block who started the chanting late on was superb. It grew and grew and the chant 'Let's pretend that we have scored' followed by the celebrations and then Pigbag was the highlight of the afternoon - very funny. But I am glad that the fans did not turn on the team - although many departed when the third goal hit the net. An easy win for Pullis in the end, but the first time that that has happened at home this season. However, had the penalty been given for the foul(s) on Smith then it could have been 2-1 and who knows, perhaps we could have got an undeserved point. Onwards to Bristol!

We lot to one of th better teams in this division whose away form is better than their home form. Shock horror!
As usual the same old guff comes up about buying a Championship striker, like you can just go to Tesco or Lidl and pick one up cheap.
I’m pretty sure that after 46 games we’ll have 3 teams below us with less points and, ultimately, that’s all that we need to happen for us this season. Just stay up and bring the young players on next season.
There’s no shame losing at home to a team like Boro.

Burton losing to Foolham 6-0, maybe the 2nd in our big two game win streak wasn’t so impressive. Absolutely meaningless. It's annoying enough losing without trying to put the team down over hypotheticals. Jeez. Burton beat Millwall, Reading, Bolton and put 3 past Sheffield Wednesday if you want to find something in that?

Yet again we are also taking all of our lessons from when we lose and ignoring almost everything when we play well.

I'd fancy us at Reading just cos we so often seem to do well there. So hard predict with our lot. Be very us to lose some real bankable home games then go and suddenly give some top teams a bloody nose.
