We have a Head of Sport Science...oooh err fancy www.qpr.co.uk/page/AsiaTour/0,,10373~2849760,00.html PREPARATION IS KEY Posted on: Sun 15 Jul 2012 With the QPR squad now settled into their first tour base in Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia, Head of Sports Science Damian Roden gives www.qpr.co.uk the low-down on how the players are being prepared for the physical demands of a Premier League season … "For the first week of training last week, we didn't do double sessions or too much in the sessions that we did in order to ease the players in and to keep everyone injury free. That will continue this week. We've got two training sessions leading up to our first game, and they won't be intensive because of the proximity of the fixture. We'll let players cut their teeth into the games and ease them into them so that they can gradually do more and more. And then when we get back to Harlington, we'll do more intensive work when the players are able to cope with those demands. The close season was a long lay-off of two months, rather than the usual five or six weeks. That makes it more difficult to maintain a decent level of fitness, hence the reason we're going for a slow and gradual build-up. Last week, we started with bigger sided games that are less intensive in comparison to smaller sided ones. We decided to go 'all football' - as opposed to doing a lot of running activities - because we're going straight into playing football over here. The players will get their fitness through the games. They'll play 45 minutes in the first game, for example, and then gradually build it up to 60 and 75 minutes. Then we'll be able to step them up again into real small sided games and competed sprints when we get back to prepare for that first fixture of the new season against Swansea. Football is a game of fitness, technique and tactics and if you work on the latter two, your fitness comes as a consequence. If you just do running activities, you're not doing anything in relation to football. By playing football, you can develop that team cohesion and understanding between players. The technique is therefore regained quicker and, as a consequence, the players get fitter quicker. We've decided to do strength and core work in the gym in the mornings when it's the hottest period of the day here. Our pitch-based training will take place in the evening - closer to the time of the games - when the temperature drops a little bit. If we trained at the hottest time it would add to the load for the players - especially with all the travelling that we're doing and the games that we're playing. That is something we have to take into consideration."

www.qpr.co.uk/page/AsiaTour/0,,10373~2850004,00.html #ASIATOUR - BLOG: SUNDAY Posted on: Sun 15 Jul 2012 R's Press Officer Matt Webb brings you the latest news from the R's pre-season tour of Asia ... The first full day of our Asia Tour would no doubt have felt much less tedious for Mark Hughes's charges than yesterday (Saturday), which consisted of a 14-hour flight. That's not to say the team weren't put through their paces - far from it. After a healthy (and deserved!) night's rest, the players assembled in the aptly named 'Ferdinand's' restaurant for breakfast before making their way down to the gym for an early morning session, where Damian Roden and Carl Serrant were on hand to put the boys through their paces. As has been the case since we arrived, Ji-Sung Park was flanked by a flurry of fans and members of the local police force - deployed as a precaution due to the phenomenal interest in our Asian superstar - as he made his way down to the team hotel's fitness centre. While we in the Press Office understood the interest in Park on these shores, you certainly have to see it to believe it. The gym session was based around strength and core work, with the players purposely kept out of the intense morning and afternoon Malaysian heat. Once a thorough work-out was negotiated, Hughes and his side made their way back to the main part of the team hotel, where lunch was served. Rest and relaxation was then the order for the remainder of the afternoon - that for everyone except Clint Hill and Jamie Mackie, who took part in a welcome press conference, as well as a meet and greet with Malaysian fans. The duo also posed for photographs - one of which sparked a moment of laughter when a sheepish gentleman in Manchester United colours shuffled towards Hill and Mackie for a picture. However, the boys were having none of it, making sure that his United shirt was covered up for the photo by the famous blue and white hoops! Refreshed from a few hours of rest, the players headed for their Kota Kinabalu training base. Eddie Niedzwiecki and Roden didn't travel with the rest of the team, however, instead arriving earlier to put on a specially-arranged training session for 14 children, who were the lucky winners of an AirAsia competition. When the team did arrive they were cheered on to the field by a 500-plus crowd, who gave the lads a tremendous welcome. Before I continue, I've got to mention just how fantastic it has been to see so many Rangers shirts on show in and around Kota Kinabalu already. Ian in the office counted at least ten on the streets on the way to training, which is only 20 minutes away - incredible! On to training, where the players braved the heat to pull through another testing session put on by Roden and Serrant, as well as Hughes, Niedzwiecki, Mark Bowen and Kevin Hitchcock.. Armand Traore's new choice of hair colour continues to be a talking point among the squad, and tonight was no different. See the picture, right, to understand why! Despite a lengthy flight from London the previous day, the players looked far from jaded, zipping the ball around the field with a real sense of purpose. Two moments that stood out in particular were an outstanding piece of vision from Park which saw the South Korean's long pass tapped home by Bobby Zamora, as well as the sharpness of Andy Johnson, whose movement was excellent. That point was echoed by Hogan Ephraim, who I spoke to moments after he completed the session's warm down. Ephraim also spoke well of the rest of the new arrivals, while telling me just how determined he is to force his way into Hughes's plans for the coming season. My colleagues from the Press Office also caught up with Anton Ferdinand for www.qpr.co.uk, as well as Johnson for QPR Player - content which will be online within the next 24 hours. The squad returned to the hotel to complete a second warm down in the swimming pool, before dinner was served at around 8pm. The players have now signed off for the night - and I think it's time I did too! It's been a hectic couple of days but I can't begin to stress how much everyone has already enjoyed the Asia experience. We've been welcomed with open arms, while the facilities are second to none. The excitement is now beginning to build ahead of Tuesday night, when Rangers kick-off the tour against a Sabah Select XI. After seeing the tempo of training tonight, I must admit that I can't wait for it, let alone August 18th! It's great to be back.

www.qpr.co.uk/page/NewsDetail/0,,10373~2849777,00.html DOUGHTY: A MASSIVE OPPORTUNITY Posted on: Sun 15 Jul 2012 QPR youth product Michael Doughty has labelled his inclusion in the team's pre-season tour of south-east Asia as a 'massive opportunity.' Having arrived in Malaysia on Saturday afternoon as part of the 26-man squad, the 19 year-old told http://www.qpr.co.uk: "I have really enjoyed the trip so far. "We received a fantastic reception when we got off the plane and we have already seen what a huge tour this is for the Club, both on and off the pitch, and we are all very excited to be here. "Now we are looking forward to the games ahead." There has been a fervent Interest in the R's squad, with one playing member in particular receiving a hero's welcome wherever he goes. Ji- Sung Park, who is the most decorated Asian player in the history of the game, is seemingly constantly surrounded by photographers and fans, and Doughty added: "He can't move - he's like David Beckham out here. "This tour represents a massive opportunity for the Club to continue to develop the brand and move forward. It's an important time for the commercial side of the Club as well as the football side." With Doughty joined in the squad by fellow youth products Max Ehmer and Michael Harriman, it seems Mark Hughes already has one eye on the future, and Doughty acknowledges this represents a chance for them to showcase their capabilities. "Any opportunity I get to impress the Manager is important for me and I will be looking to take that as much as I can," added Doughty, who has been at QPR since the age of 14. "The Club is obviously moving forward and has a lot of quality players but if I can stay in and around the squad and continue to develop as a footballer, hopefully that will stand me in good stead. "The Manager has made it clear to us that if we are doing well and impressing, we will all get an opportunity and it's up to us to take that. "It would be good if I could use this opportunity as a springboard to hopefully get into the First Team."
