Rereading back to Jan when we signed Agyemang for example
From our Official Site "Queens Park Rangers Football Club are pleased to confirm the signing of Ghanaian international striker Patrick Agyemang. The 27 year-old striker has penned a four-and-a-half year contract at Loftus Road, after the Club agreed an undisclosed fee with Preston North End for his signature."
And Agyemand was not such hot property or some Jem that we wanted to make sure was staying on.

I always assumed that the club didn't want to pay the desired signing fee or salary but offset this by offering a long contract which guaranteed him a the money if they ever got rid of him but yes its a strangely long contract.

Goes back to whether for the money they've spent on players: Transfer fees, wages, (agents/signing on fees, loan fees), whether they've spent wisely: Spent it as well as they could have - or as other clubs have done. Throw in paying off previous managers!

Throw in paying off previous managers! I'd agree if it were a science but every manager wastes money and we have to guess at every players quality to price ratio....clearly some player are less of guess but there is usually a premium for that.
