Gorkss: Don't bank on me scoring many more times
Nov 12 2009 By Yann Tear, London Informer
KASPARS GORKSS picked the perfect moment to score his first goal for Rangers, but he says don't expect too many more - he just wants to concentrate on being a good defender.
The Latvian was in the right place at the right time to grab the winner at Sheffield Wednesday at the weekend and make it four away victories for the Hoops this season.
It was the ideal way to mark his 28th birthday the day before and the strike was overdue - it was his 51st Rangers appearance, whereas he netted eight in roughly the same number of games for previous club Blackpool.
But like a fast bowler who weighs in with unexpected runs, Gorkss knows he will be judged for his speciality, rather than for the added extras.
"Really, I'm not so worried about scoring. For me, the most important thing is the defensive side of my game and goals are just a bonus," he said.
"I'd rather still concentrate on our defensive work because I think it's one side of the game we definitely can improve. I think sometimes we still concede too easily.
"We obviously don't have too many problems scoring, but keeping clean sheets has been a different story."
Gorkss continued: "Because of the goals I scored for Blackpool, everybody has been expecting me to do the same, but maybe I was just lucky back then.
"I've had some opportunities before now, but have been missing them. I think that's the thing with set pieces though - you need some sort of luck.
Still, it was my first Championship goal for Rangers so it was quite special for me, especially as it was the winning goal.
"At my age, you stop celebrating birthdays. But it was probably the best birthday present I could get for myself."
That win at Hillsborough was the fourth on the road in six games for the Rs, who drew at Newcastle in one of the two they failed to win.
That makes Jim Magilton's men even more prolific on the road than at Loftus Road at the moment, and they should return to action at Doncaster with spirits soaring after climbing up to a season's highest fourth place.
"It's always nice to get a win before an international break and we will return to playing in a good position," said Gorkss, who was this week excused from making a
potentially tiring trip to Honduras for his country's latest friendly.
"In some ways, it's a shame we don't play this week to keep the good form going, but the rest may be good for us. At least this way we calm down and don't get carried away. In general, we are playing much better football this year and
all the hard work is paying off with goals. We go into matches full of confidence and don't think we are going to lose - even when we went 2-0 down against Derby.
"We also don't think so much about draws, because if you set yourself higher goals, you want to go for a win in every match."
