Sentinel - Crewe Alex: Walton fears to his Alex future
Tuesday, November 10, 2009
SIMON Walton admits he may not have done enough to keep his place in Crewe's side after his low-key performance during Saturday's FA Cup capitulation at non-league York City.
Walton, signed on a season-long loan from Plymouth by former Crewe manager Gudjon Thordarson, hadn't started a game under interim boss Dario Gradi until the first-round tie at Kit Kat Crescent.
Fitness concerns have held back Walton since he arrived at Gresty Road in August, and the 22-year-old former Leeds and QPR midfielder has been restricted to five starts.
"Obviously losing at York hasn't helped me put forward much of a case for myself," he said.
"But it's been very difficult at times. I've come here to get a run of games, but for one reason or another that's not happened for me.
"I was given a chance at York because Steve Schumacher was injured. Whether I've taken the chance, I don't know. But as long as I'm here I will do my best."
Both Schumacher (groin) and striker Shaun Miller, who also missed the cup clash through injury, have yet to return to training.
But the duo are not being ruled out of Saturday's visit of Morecambe, when Walton says Crewe need to show a more competitive edge to get their league campaign back on track.
"We seem to crack when under a bit of pressure," added Walton. "We need to be able to deal with that. There's been a different approach under Dario and we are passing the ball better, but it is the other side of the game which is letting us down at the moment."
