Leicester City boss Nigel Pearson is expecting a tough test at rampant RangersThursday, October 29, 2009, Nigel Pearson says QPR will be a "considerable obstacle" for Leicester City to clear tomorrow night. Jim Magilton's side are the form team in the Championship, scoring 12 goals in three straight wins against Preston (4-0), Reading (4-1) and Derby County (4-0). They have also defeated Cardiff and drawn with Newcastle in a run of just two defeats in 13 games which has seen them rise to seventh spot. QPR are also unbeaten at Loftus Road and Pearson said: "They are winning and scoring a lot of goals, we will need to be at our best as they will be a considerable obstacle. "It's pretty clear we are going to play a side in form who have scored a lot of goals, and we need to be at our best for this game." Pearson conceded that City are going to have to play better than they did at Reading, despite claiming all three points with a Martyn Waghorn first-half strike. The win at the Madejski Stadium pushed City up to fifth place and they could climb above Cardiff into an automatic promotion spot if they win in west London. It illustrates the tightness of the division that there is just six points between Newcastle in pole position and 11th-placed Watford. "It's a very tight table and a lot of teams are involved in the promotion shake-up," said Pearson. "There are also a number of sides who will fancy stringing together results to get in there as well. "It's a bit early to talk about how the league is shaping up, but we knew from the start it will be a tough league." QPR midfielder Akos Buzsaky says City are in the top six "on merit". The 27-year-old Hungarian watched City leapfrog his side into a play-off place with the Reading clash shown live on Sky. Two nights earlier, QPR had demolished Derby on terrestrial television. "They are a very, very good side, as their early results suggest," said the former Plymouth man. "But it's not about what they might do, it's about focusing on what we can do. "Our home form has been really good since the start of the campaign. "Over the course of a season, it will be our results at Loftus Road that ultimately govern where we finish this season. "We don't fear anyone and, if we play to the best of our ability, we're confident we can turn anyone over. "We showed the viewing public what we are all about against Derby, and we'll be going all out to put on another show on Friday evening." Former City boss Peter Taylor has held brief talks with Ipswich manager Roy Keane about joining the coaching staff at Portman Road. Former Hull, Crystal Palace and England Under-21 manager Taylor is available having been sacked by Wycombe earlier this month, and Keane is thought to want an experienced coach alongside him as he bids to turn around Town's poor start to the season. "Possibly something might be done next week but I'm not prepared to get involved in what at the moment is only speculation,'' said Taylor. "Roy and I have had a chat, a little chat, and that's as far as it has gone so far." www.thisisleicestershire.co.uk/sport/Leicester-City-boss-Nigel-Pearson-expecting-tough-test-rampant-Rangers/article-1461652-detail/article.html

BBC QPR v Leicester Coca Cola Championship Venue: Loftus Road Date: Friday, 30 October 2009 Kick-off: 1945 GMT Coverage: BBC Sport website, BBC Radio 5 live, BBC local radio & highlights on The Football League Show TEAM NEWS QPR's on-loan midfielder Ben Watson is serving a two-match suspension, but Mikele Leigertwood is back in contention for a starting place. Leigertwood has recovered from flu and defender Fitz Hall a groin problem, but Hogan Ephraim and Angelo Balanta are still out injured. Leicester manager Nigel Pearson has no new injuries or suspensions to worry about ahead of the trip to Loftus Road. Aleksandar Tunchev and Stephen Clemence remain on the sidelines. MATCH PREVIEW There seems to be no stopping Queens Park Rangers and their slick passing football at the moment, but they now face another side that are in good form. Leicester are fifth - two places above the R's - and, like the west London side, have lost just two league games so far this season. And while Rangers are strong at home, Leicester have been equally impressive on the road. A victory at Loftus Road would be the Foxes' 11th away league win of 2009. Leicester could cause Jim Magilton's men problems if they can contain the likes of Akos Buzsaky, Adel Taarabt and Wayne Routledge. But that, as a growing number of Championship teams are discovering, is easier said than done. MATCH FACTS Head-to-head • QPR are unbeaten in four league games against Leicester (2W, 2D). 606: DEBATE Have your say on this match • Leicester have won twice in 11 visits to Loftus Road over the last 28 years. Queens Park Rangers • QPR have won their last three Championship matches, scoring four goals in each of them. They have beaten Preston 4-0, Reading 4-1 and Derby 4-2. • Jim Magilton's side are second in the Championship's 'form table' with 13 points out of 18. • Rangers have conceded an average of a goal a game in the Championship this season (13 in 13). • They have won their last three home league games and are unbeaten in 12 at Loftus Road, winning six and drawing six since losing to Norwich on 3 March. • Rangers have the best scoring rate in home Championship games, with 16 scored so far this season. • Mikele Leigertwood is set to make his 100th appearance for the club. And if on the field from the outset, he will also be making his 200th league start. Leicester • Leicester are unbeaten in five Championship matches and have won their last two. • The Foxes last won three successive matches in the Championship in February 2007. • They have conceded one goal in five matches and kept clean sheets in the last three. Football League - THIS WEEKEND'S TV GAMESPosted on: 29.10.2009 There is a triple header of action from the Coca-Cola Championship, this weekend, starting at Loftus Road on Friday night as Queens Park Rangers take on Leicester City.
Rangers are one of the division's in form sides, taking 13 points from their last six matches, which has seen them score four goals in their last three matches as they beat Preston North End, Reading and Derby County.
The recent run has seen Jim Magilton's side move up to seventh in the league table, just four points behind leaders Newcastle United.
Leicester sit just one point and two places clear of the Hoops and they also go into the match in a good run of form which sees them unbeaten in their last five matches. Their last defeat came last month, when they lost 2-1at home to Preston, since then they have won three and drawn two including wins over Middlesbrough, Crystal Palace and Reading.
The last time the two sides met at Loftus Road was back in January 2008 and it was the home side who triumphed with an impressive 3-1 win thanks to goals from Damion Stewart, Adam Bolder and Dexter Blackstock, before Iain Hume netted a consolation for the Foxes. The second match takes place on Sunday, as Cardiff City host Nottingham Forest in the late kick-off. This match sees the two in form sides go head to head with Forest having taken 16 points from their last 18, while City have taken 13. Dave Jones' side have won four, drawn one and lost one of their last six, which has seen them jump up to second in the Coca-Cola Championship table. Their last defeat came away at Sheffield Wednesday last month but they bounced back in style to beat Derby 6-1 and Watford 4-0 in their next two matches. Forest have won five of the last six matches, which includes victories over Peterborough United, Newcastle and Barnsley and they also sit just four points behind the Magpies, despite currently sitting in 10th place, so a win could see them go to joint points with Sunday's opponents. The final slice of the action comes from Bramall Lane on Monday night as Newcastle United travel south to take on Sheffield United. The match will be Chris Hughton's first since taking the Manager's job on a permanent basis and he would love to celebrate with a win, while United are without a win in their last six and have lost their last three matches, so need to get back on track. Kevin Blackwell's side last tasted victory on September 18th, when they edged the Sheffield derby to beat Wednesday 3-2 but since then they have lost to Swansea City, Sc**thorpe United, Blackpool and most recently Cardiff which has seen them slip to 13th in the table and 10 points off the top. Newcastle got back to winning ways last weekend after a run of two draws and two defeats but it took a last minute strike from Kevin Nolan to see off Doncaster and keep them top of the table. Their defeats against Forest and Sc**thorpe are two of just three league defeats all season, the other coming at the hands Blackpool last month. These two sides last met at Bramall Lane in the Premier League back in April 2007 and a goal 10 minutes from time from Steven Taylor secured all three points for the visitors. Obafemi Martins gave the Magpies an early lead and it looked to be enough before striker Christian Nade scored his third league goal for the Blades but his joy was short-lived as Taylor struck to secure the win. www.football-league.co.uk/latestnews/this-weekends-tv-games-20091029_2245681_1840630

The Times - Rob Wright October 29, 2009 Rangers the bet at 10-11 QPR look worthy favourites at general odds of 10-11 to beat Leicester in their Coca-Cola Championship match at Loftus Road on Friday evening. Rangers go into the clash unbeaten in six home starts this season and with confidence sky-high after claiming a third consecutive win when coming from behind to triumph 4-2 away to Derby last Saturday. While manager Jim Magilton will be keen to eradicate the defensive lapses that led to his side trailing 2-0 in that match, his team’s ability to find goals when required makes them a potent force. Rangers, who have notched 11 goals in their past three games, find themselves well placed in seventh spot, trailing leaders Newcastle by only four points, and fifth-placed Leicester by a single point. They enjoy a game in hand over each of the teams above them. Magilton deserves much praise for his shaping of the team since taking the reigns this summer, notably exploiting the loan system to great effect in recruiting Adel Taarabt, Jay Simpson and Ben Watson from Spurs, Arsenal and Wigan respectively. Leicester, a best-priced 7-2 with Betfred, kept themselves in the picture for a second successive promotion when triumphing 1-0 away to Reading on Monday, extending the home side’s winless run at the Madejski Stadium to 16 games. However, it was a victory last year’s League One champions barely deserved and an improved performance will be required to upset an in-form Rangers. The draw is top-priced at 13-5 with Stan James. timesonline.typepad.com/sports_book/2009/10/rangers-the-bet-at-1011-.html

Yes, watching the almost off-hand way they knocked the ball around, I thought the two obvious things. One, that if we go on playing like that, we'll walk it.
And the other, that many teams look unbeatable for a while, then, suddenly, it vanishes. Sometimes there's a trick, a key. It bewilders the opposition, until they find out what the key is, but when they're rumbled, they can't adapt, and the whole thing falls apart.
I remember an interesting story about Ramsey's Ipswich, when they were playing in the second tier, and going really well. I think it was the year they won the Second Division, a season before they took the League as well.
They played Southampton, and Ted Bates - remember the old fox at the Dell? - worked out the simple way Ipswich played. He persuaded a bloke - I think he was called Murray - to play out of position, simply to shut down Leadbetter, the tortoise-like playmaker. And it worked.
5-0 to Southampton. Piece of cake.
And it was only half time. It ended 6-1, and Ramsey said cheerfully that at least Ipswich drew the second half.
But when the return fixture came up, Murray wouldn't play out of position, and threatened to walk - or maybe to knock Bates's block off - if he insisted. So much for the team.
Ipswich went on to win the Division, and as everyone took it for granted they were going straight back down, nobody took them seriously until they took the title.
But the story wasn't quite over. In the Charity Shield the season after they won the League - they wouldn't have been in it otherwise ;D - they played Spurs, by which time Nicholson had worked out what was going on. After all, Spurs and Burnley were quality, played out a classic Cup Final, and there had to be some reason why a bunch of farm labourers had outdone them the year before.
Spurs duly splattered them 5-1, and it was game over for Town until Robson created his even more remarkable footballing side at Portman Road.
Ramsey was an interesting chap. England captain, he was said to be unable to run, tackle or turn. As he was a full-back, this was something of a disadvantage. But he worked at his running, and got better, even though he was never quick. And he insisted on passing the ball, a novel idea for full-backs then, as the ball was usually launched over the roof for the winger to chase. He made the winger come back for the ball (so he could actually give it to him), and that when Ramsey was a young player at Southampton.
He was in the England side annihilated by the Magical Magyars in 1953 - 6-3 at Wembley, and 7-1 in Budapest. The first foreign side to beat us at Wembley.
So he knew how easily deceived football people were, as we still thought we were world class. He may also have been in the World Cup when England lost 1-0 to the USA. At least one reporter changed the score to 10-1 when he wired it to his paper, as there was no way England could have lost that game.
Even more intriguing, he was in the Spurs side which won the Second Division, then the First in successive seasons at the beginning of the fifties. They had a system - push-and-run - and because they came up from the lower league, nobody expected them to do well. No doubt he remembered that as an advantage when he set about achieving the impossible in 1962.
Our style is somewhat different. I thought our movement was great against Derby, although the high angle TV picture suggested a lack of technique in many players which could be problematic.
But we seem to have so many options that, at the moment, it doesn't matter.
Until the modern era, nothing lasted long in English football. Chapman's reigns at Huddersfield and Arsenal were comparatively brief compared to the Liverpool-United duopoly of the last 35 years. Ipswich faded once they peaked. and Clough got nowhere near repeating his opening salvo at Forest, similarly short and sweet like his Derby reign.
The gap in class between the upper end of the Premiership makes promotion a different animal now. Burnley and Ipswich won the League either side of Spurs. Southampton, QPR, West Ham, Derby, Forest, Stoke and other Clubs - Watford, Wimbledon among them - all did well.
But it is difficult, now, to build a side in this division which will compete in the top one the way that QPR 73 did, for instance. It would be unusual to get players of that calibre in this league. And in the top flight, a second tier side either collapses, or is dumped. It is easier to do that, buy a new one, and if you come down, dump that one, and hope to go back up with another.
So the quality of football is rather like everything else, except at Old Trafford. A rather unpredictable variable. Big spending might make a difference, but big spending sides like Middlesbrough, Newcastle, West Ham, Leeds and many others are increasingly suffering the consequences. of living beyond their means.
Without anything much to show for it. Even worse if this isn't what happens when you live beyond your means, just the first signs of it.
Apart from that, I expect us to coast into the Champions League on schedule, through sheer skill/wealth/toughness/cleverness/know-how and all the rest. Another four tomorrow night, although that will be for Leicester.
We'll get 19.
Probably.
