after winning 2-0 tonight Gareth Relieved Of Duties MIDDLESBROUGH FC have tonight announced that manager Gareth Southgate has been relieved of his position with immediate effect. Football consultant Alan Smith will also be leaving the club as part of the change. Chairman Steve Gibson said: "This has been the most difficult decision I've had to make in all the time I've been in football. "Gareth has given Middlesbrough Football Club magnificent service as a skipper and, in very difficult circumstances, as manager. "I appointed Gareth in a situation that was greatly unfavourable to him. "He is a good man and has all the qualities and integrity that we wanted in a manager. "However, the time is right for change and that change has had to be made. "Gareth will always be welcome at our football club. English football needs people of his stature and we feel certain that this experience will serve him well. "Gareth deserves another opportunity once he has had the chance to rest and refresh himself." The club will not be making any further comment at this time. www.mfc.premiumtv.co.uk/page/News/NewsDetail/0,,1~1832420,00.html?

Blimey, well Gareth can't say Gibson hasn't given him a fair crack at the whip. As the sacking came after a win I guess they already have a new man lined up. Fingers crossed it's free-fall for Boro now.

What it's like to have a manager for 3 1/2 years? In our just over 3 1/2 years, we've had Holloway, Waddock, Gregory, Harford (Acting), De Canio, Dowie, Ainsworth (Acting), Sousa, Ainsworth (Acting), Magilton

It's a pretty risky move. Maybe they have someone great lined up. But offhand can't think of someone who would pretty much guarantee promotion

pretty bold move from gibson, whoever the new manager is can only improve their position in the league by 3 places. he'll have a tough job on his hands.

Is there anything in that zed? Strachan is 1/5 favourite, because he has the same initials so no new coaching kit required. ;D

Strachan is 1/5 favourite, because he has the same initials so no new coaching kit required. ;D But a tailor would be needed! Fan power - the fans blatantly stayed away in numbers over disatisfaction at the teams' performances so rather than see things in the cold light of day and face the truth the board made the usual decision and offered up the usual sacrificial lamb. I like Southgate as a person and can now wish him all the best for the future: All the best Gareth!
