Watford Official Site - ICE ICE BABY Thu 08 Oct 2009 HEIDAR Helguson has been on the road to recovery after his calf injury, thanks to some excellent rehabilitation from the Watford medical team and Champneys Health Resort in Tring. Champneys Tring have a 'Kriotherapy' chamber where you spend just three minutes in the specialised chamber which is set at -135 degrees. The sub-zero temperatures assist in the acceleration of muscle recovery from exercise, so the facilities are perfect for aiding recovering injured sports men and women. Helguson is monitored by one of the Champneys staff It's frequently the therapy of choice for Olympic athletes as well as many other sports professionals and Champneys Tring is one of the first places in the UK to offer this unusual treatment. Hornets boss Malky Mackay gave his verdict on the treatment which his Icelandic striker and several other members of the squad in rehabilitation are receiving. After spending a short time in the Kriotherapy chamber, Helguson worked on a high-altitude bike with an oxygen mask on "Heidar's been doing a lot of the Kriotherapy work at Champneys, to whom we're very thankful to and we're pleased with the way he's going at the moment" said the Watford manager. "He's also been doing some specialist treatments in an oxygenated area there so he's been working hard with the physio and therapists. "He's been jogging and he's gradually coming on and we've now got a couple of weeks for him to get fully fit." www.watfordfc.com/page/NewsDetail/0,,10400~1820549,00.html

They fail to mention. Normally in a loan situation an injured player returns to the parent club. We thank QPR for paying his wages whilst we tend to him!

And again, I say, I'm just glad that "people" on other sites read this board, and feel it interesting enough to also use the material.

Helguson's stats since we signed him, first on loan/then permanently. (Did he take/pass a medical?) On loan, he made 5+2 League appearances, scoring 3 goals After his signing: 13+5 League appearances, scoring 3 goals So that's in total 18+7 (25) - 6 goals in his year at QPR www.soccerbase.com/players_details.sd?playerid=19042

Watford hope QPR loanee Heidar Helguson will make trip to Middlesbrough - 10th October 2009 Heidar Helguson is still on track to make his return from injury against Middlesbrough next weekend. The Watford legend started running again last weekend but Hornets boss Malky Mackay said the club would not know exactly what part the striker could play at The Riverside until he starts training with the squad again next week. Helguson, who pulled his calf muscle in the 3-3 draw with Leicester City three weeks ago, has been receiving state-of-the-art treatment at Champneys Health Resort in Tring. The 32-year-old has been using the resort’s kriotherapy chamber, which consists of spending three minutes in temperatures of minus 135 degrees to speed up the muscles’ recovery process. The former Fulham man has also been exercising in a specialist oxygenated area. Mackay said: “Heidar’s been jogging and he’s gradually coming on and we’ve now got a couple of weeks to get something going. “He’s been doing a lot of the kriotherapy work at Champneys and we’re pleased with the way he’s going at the moment. “He needs to join in with full training before we can gauge him in what direction we go, as to whether he starts, is on the bench or whether he is involved at all and we wait until the following week. But we are happy with the progress so far.” It is also still unclear how long captain Jay DeMerit will be out for but Mackay has dismissed rumours that the decision to perform surgery has already been made. The centre back cut his right eye four weeks ago after a particle of grit was caught underneath his contact lens and it became infected.
The initial antibiotics were not strong enough and although the cut was healing, the bacteria spread. The injury is currently healing well but it is unclear as to whether DeMerit will need surgery to stop the scar tissue on his eye affecting his vision. When asked whether the decision to have surgery had already been made, Mackay said: “Absolutely not. We will not make the decision on what is going to happen to him at least for the next ten days or so. He has specialists to see over the next ten days and no decision will be made yet.” The injuries to Helguson and DeMerit and last week’s virus, which struck down five first-team players, has not caused Mackay to rush out and make more loan signings in the aftermath of Saturday’s 4-0 defeat against Cardiff City. Mackay confirmed there were no trialists with the club at present but did not rule out having a closer look at possible signings during the international break. The manager is keen to bring new players into Vicarage Road but believes until that happens, he has a “good group” at the club already. Mackay said: “It is an ongoing process at the moment but I will keep my ear to the ground and keep chipping away to get the right people into the club and that will never stop as far as I am concerned. “The knee-jerk transfers I think always end up in tears and I think it has to be calculated and for the good of the football club and the good of the team. “If somebody is coming in, they have to add to the group and until that situation, we have a good group here.” The Hornets took on Oxford United on Tuesday in a behind-closed-doors friendly and although they lost 1-0, Mackay claimed the result was not important. Nathan Ellington, Jon Harley, Scott Severin, Jure Travner and Mat Sadler all played and the Watford manager said there may another behind-closed-doors game in the next week to try and build up some of the squad’s fitness www.watfordobserver.co.uk/sport/4672678.Watford_hope_Heidar_will_make_Boro/

Helmel Gazette/Chris Armstrong - 14th October - Talk turns to the injury table With the international break bringing a timely intermission from action for much of the Watford squad, focus at Vicarage Road has turned to the injury plight of key players. While the squad appears to have overcome the mystery sickness bug which confined several first-teamers to their beds, Heidar Helguson's battle for fitness is still touch and go despite an intense recovery effort.
The influential forward scored twice on his return to the club against Leicester, but picked up a calf injury shortly afterwards and has been out of action since.
With the two-week break to recover before the Hornets' trip to Middlesbrough, Helguson has been working at Champneys Health Resort in Tring, making the most of the venue's rehabilitation facilities.
The Icelandic international has been exercising in an oxegenated environment in order to speed up the healing process, as well as making use of the resort's Kriotherapy chamber.
Although it is an extremely brief process, Kriotherapy exposes the body to temperatures as low as -135 degrees, the intense conditions aiding muscle recuperation.
Talking to the club's official website, manager Malky Mackay spoke about Helguson's progress: "Heidar's been doing a lot of the Kriotherapy work at Champneys, to whom we're very thankful to and we're pleased with the way he's going at the moment.
"He's also been doing some specialist treatments in an oxygenated area there so he's been working hard with the physio and therapists. "He's been jogging and he's gradually coming on and we've now got a couple of weeks for him to get fully fit."
While Helguson may well be in contention for Saturday's encounter at the Riverside, club captain Jay DeMerit remains sidelined with an eye infection. Although bizarre in nature, it is an injury which has kept the defender from featuring for over a month for his team and as of yet there is no set date for return. The American is undoubtedly keen to return to action soon but will take his time in recovering, understandably declaring the importance of his sight not just for his livelihood, but for life beyond his football career. Two of the club's youngest stars featured in England U21s' European Championship qualifier with Macedonia at the weekend. Both Scott Loach and Tom Cleverley played the full 90 minutes in the 6-3 triumph, with the latter playing a part in two of the goals. The on-loan Man Utd youngster was impressive in attack, setting up goals for Andy Carroll and Zavron Hines. After several players pulled out through injury, Don Cowie was delighted to receive his first Scotland call-up, and made his debut for his country on Saturday. He replaced fellow debutant Ross Wallace at half time, but was unable to prevent his nation from falling to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Japan. After consecutive home defeats, Watford now look for another win on the road. The odds will stacked against them however. Gareth Southgate's Middlesbrough represent strong opposition despite a recent slump in form. After impressing off the bench in the Hornets last outing against Cardiff, Nathan Ellington may be pushing for a starting berth alongside Danny Graham in attack. Scott Severin should also be back in contention following an injury lay off, but Mackay is likely to stick with much of the team that started the Cardiff game. Having made a very positive start to the campaign, Watford now sit 15th in the table following consecutive defeats. Boro meanwhile occupy third place, but can be vulnerable, as displayed by their 5-0 drubbing at home by West Brom several weeks ago. www.hemeltoday.co.uk/watford-way/Talk-turns-to-the-injury.5732381.jp
