Wasps in the mood for a revival
Friday 28th November 2008 By Alan Feldberg »
THE noises coming out of Wasps HQ this week did not sound much like a death rattle.
If anyone thought they had curled up in a ball to lick their wounds, an hour at their training ground would have quickly rid them of that impression.
Coaches were joking with each other and the players had smiles on their faces as they were put through their paces – points might be in short supply, bonhomie certainly is not.
Forwards coach Leon Holden articulated the atmosphere.
He said: “It feels like we’re in the top four with the vibe of the place at the moment.
“There is no moaning, no back-stabbing, no over-reacting or over-analysing, and the mood is still very good.
“Everyone comes to work with a positive attitude. Everyone has made an effort to come in and be upbeat, but it’s not a forced thing at all.
“There is no point coming in on Monday morning all depressed and doom and gloom. That’s a selfish attitude. It’s self-indulgence.
“But the atmosphere is still really, really good.
“That shouldn’t be expected in our current situation, but there has been a tightening of the group.
“You know people are having a go at us, fans and journalists, and it makes you even closer.”
The league table does not lie; Wasps are in the mire.
But some of their closest rivals have blown internal fuses in much better situations in recent seasons, and Holden believes that was to their detriment.
He said: “I guess we’re lucky in that we’ve got experience of times like this before within the club.
“Other teams might panic and try to change everything they’re doing and change personnel.
“We are not like that, and it’s nice to know you’ve got that inner belief, not only in your own job, but within the club as a whole.”
