These may be 'functional' signings who do the job that's needed (for quite a lot of money) ...And you obviously need a blend of ones who can do a job right away and ones that can grow.
Obviously I'd never be critical, but there was definitely something to be said for the old days (15, 20, 25 and more years ago) when we were signing lower division gems who grew into great players; or were already great players but nobody yet knew or were bargain buys. From Parkes, Bowles, Sinton, Sinclair, Givens, Peathingy, and of course Ferdinand.
From the Sheron/Spencer/Peacock signings on down...

Again, you wouldn't say that Parejo and Ledesma fall into that category? Or Lee Cook for that matter (didn't we get him on a free transfer?)
