OFFICIAL CLUB STATEMENT
After a meeting held following Friday evening's 3-1 home defeat to Barnet, Northampton Town Football Club and Stuart Gray have decided to part company.
"It is with a heavy heart that we, the club and Stuart Gray have come to this decision but it is necessary to consider what is in the best interests of the club both long term and to try and win promotion this season," said Chairman David Cardoza.
"We, the Board of Directors, gave Stuart every opportunity to strengthen the squad this summer and to build a squad capable of taking the club straight back up. Although Stuart brought some good players to the club our results and performances have been very disappointing for both the club and our very loyal supporters.
"We enjoyed some very good times under Stuart. 16 months ago he took us to one of our highest placings in the last 40 years and he has attracted some very good players to the club. There nearly always comes a time though when a manager has to move on for the good of the club and having reviewed our results and performances over an extended period we feel that time is now.
"We thank Stuart for the terrific work he has done for the club and wish him well for the future.
"Ian Sampson will be in temporary charge until further notice, assisted by Jim Barron. No one is ruled in and no one is ruled out of becoming the next manager of Northampton Town. I am sure this club will be an attractive proposition to a lot of potential managers and we will see what the next few days and weeks bring.
"We will not put any timescales on this. It is important we take our time to get the right man.
"There will be plenty of speculation as to who the new manager might or might not be. As a club we won't be drawn on commenting on that, but we do want to make sure we get the right man to lead this club into the re-development period and beyond.
"It is important now that the fans get right behind Ian Sampson and the players in the next few games and we hope to see some of the performances that we know this squad is capable of."
