A last minute strike from defender Matthew Heywood earned the Mariners a deserved point in Brian Stein's first game in charge of the Reserves against Leeds United at Blundell Park.
Enoch Showumni had given the visitors the lead in the first half and missed a penalty before half time. The hosts were much improved after the interval and constantly threatened before Heywood struck with virtually the last kick of the game.
The Whites named a strong side for the visit to Blundell Park with Casper Ankergren, Lubomir Michalik, David Prutton, Showumni and Andy Robinson amongst the first-teamers on show. Town named three trialists in their ranks; ex-Manchester City right back Chris Ramsey, Watford left-back Louis Lavers and former QPR winger Chris Arthur.
Leeds started the game the better of the two sides with the pace and power of Showumni and striker partner Tom Elliott causing the Mariners all kinds of problems. Skilful winger Josh Falkingham was heavily involved and his run and cross presented Leeds with the first goalscoring chance of the night but Showumni's header was blocked by Heywood.
United took the lead in disputed circumstances on 34 minutes. Robinson cut in from the left and saw his shot well saved by Leigh Overton but Showumni was on hand to bundle the ball home from close range, despite looking yards offside in the process.
Robinson then saw another low shot saved by Overton after a mazy run before the Whites were presented with a golden opportunity to double their advantage from the penalty spot on 40 minutes. Prutton had picked out Showumni with an inch-perfect pass but as the ex-Luton striker was bundled over by Lavers as he prepared to shoot. Lavers was booked for the challenge but was spared when Showumni clipped his penalty down the centre of the goal and saw it bounce off the crossbar to safety.
The Mariners started the second period by showing their intent going forward; Peter Bore bursting through the centre before firing a shot just wide of the target. It was an end-to-end game at the start of the second half and Showumni saw another header blocked from a dangerous position.
Town's Chris Jones was looking dangerous with his pace on the break and the Welshman, Bore and young star Josh Fuller were linking up well. Stein's side were beginning to pile on the pressure and penned Leeds back for long periods.
Just after the hour they were almost caught on the break though. A long ball from the back found substitute Will Hatfield in acres of space, he picked out Elliott who returned the favour, but Overton did superbly to block with his feet. Minutes later the Town stopper was sharply down to deny a clever turn and shot from ex-Swansea star Robinson.
Leeds were on top at this point and Robinson thundered a shot against the crossbar as the Whites looked to put the game to bed. Town had a second wind going into the last ten minutes and the tireless Jones saw a solo effort go just wide after a jinking run from out wide.
There was drama in injury time and it led to the Mariners' equaliser. Jones put the Leeds defence under pressure and Alan Sheehan sliced a clearance back to Ankergren. The ball span on the swirling wind and the Danish 'keeper only succeeded in handling the ball outside his area. Jones fired in a low free kick that Ankergren parried away to the feet of Heywood. The big Town defender saw his first two efforts blocked but then smashed the ball home off the underside of the crossbar to equalise with mere seconds remaining.
TOWN: Overton; Ramsey, Lavers, Linwood, Heywood; Normington, Fuller, Deane, Arthur (Bird); Bore (Corner), Jones.
LEEDS: Ankergren; Darville, Sheehan, Huntington, Michalik; Kilkenny, Falkingham, Prutton, Robinson; Showumni (Hatfield), Elliott
