Ater the Bowles-Marsh debate, the other perennial favourite, Naming QPR's best ever manager. Given the Terry Venables -to-QPR Tabloid story(yet again).... and given that it's exactly one decade ago today, October 16, 1998, that Gerry Francis returned as QPR manager...and it's exactly 34 years ago (October 16, 1998) since Dave Sexton was appointed QPR manager. (See today's blog: "On This Day" - qprreport.blogspot.com/2008/10/on-this-day-one-decade-since-gerry.html) Who in your opinion was QPR's best-ever Manager?

In my time - Terry Venables (though I am not sure about him coming back!) FA cup Final, (old) div. 2 Champions - whilst all the time playing with a style and flair that was beautiful to watch. Turned us into a top flight team from a team that was going nowhere (sorry, Doc!) Hopefully this time next year I can say the same about Dowie!

Difficult question that. When you have Alec Stock, Gordon Jago, Dave Sexton and Terry Venables to choose from, to name but a few. I'll go for Stock because Paul Whitehouse based "jumpers for goalposts" on him.

I find myself agreeing, without Alec Stock and Jim Gregory, we would still be standing on grass banks with 3000 other Rs.

Venables for me too. I was gutted when he left 3 days after the tannoy announcement saying he was staying. At the time I thought that was it, we would be relegated just like the boom and bust period a few years earlier.
With hindsight I don't think Tel would have stayed much longer anyway and I'm glad he left for Barca and not another London team. We did very well without him proving to me that no one person is bigger than the club but I don't think we have had a better manager since Terry.
I don't want him back now, we need stability and Tel can't hold down a job for longer than a few months but if we were to change manager I would want Steve Coppell on a five year deal with control over signings and the reintroduction of the Academy.

Can't say Jago was the best but I live in the Tampa Bay area and I watched him manage Rodney Marsh and the Tampa Bay Rowdies in the 70s and thought he did well. I guess my QPR connection kinda started then though I didnt know it at the time!

Yeah, Jim Smith, that is funny!! You meant it as a joke right? right?!?!
I think that Venables was the best tactical manager of the modern era. You really had a feeling that the was thinking through the game plan and actively developing young players before your eyes.
However, I am surprised that nobody has given a shout out to Gerry. He took us to 5th in the Premiership. I guess his second shot at the job tarnished his earlier record. We were the top London club that year and a genuine contender. Gerry gets a rough rap because of the dreariness of his second go around. He just seemed so tired and spent that turn around. But it should never be forgotten that he was the captain when we came second, he captained the England team and, as mentioned, manager the club to 5th int he Premiership. Nobody else associated with QPR has had as much success as Gerry.
