QPR dig deep for Italian hot-shot Pellicori Jul 16 2009 London Informer/Ealing Gazette
QPR will pay over the odds for Alessandro Pellicori - but only if the Italian striker proves he's worth a £1million fee during the next two games.
Reports that the 27-year-old's transfer is a done deal are wide of the mark.
But Rangers are worried that unless they pay far more than they might need to they will lose the prolific hitman to someone else.
The deal will be rushed through if Pellicori's trial with Rs turns up trumps, because his club, Avellino, are on the verge of bankruptcy and after being relegated from Serie B they need all the cash they can get.
Pellicori was last night (Wednesday) with the Rs squad on their tour of Slovenia and Croatia that ends on Sunday with the match against NK Carlovac - but an insider insisted Pellicori was just one of a number of irons in the fire.
"If Jim Magilton likes what he sees," said the source, "then a deal can be done quickly. With the state Avellino are in it could be that a future creditor would let him go far more cheaply - but there are too many ifs and maybes to all of that."
The player was loaned out to Serie B side Grosseto last season, and has done the rounds in Italy's second tier except for a single spell in the top-flight with Lecce three seasons ago.
However, the season before last he hit 18 for Avellino in a notoriously defensive league, while playing as the lone hitman for the ailing club.
An Rs insider said: "He's come to an age where he could be perfect for QPR - but that's all in the hands of the manager."

It's also TOTALLY crazy. We're talking about a 28 year old who's a lower division Italian player. It really does look like no change at Loftus Road

An Rs insider said: " He's come to an age where he could be perfect for QPR - but that's all in the hands of the manager." I remember when we paid our record transfer fee for a young striker entering his peak off the back of two seasons when he scored 20+ each season. Mike Sheron was his name and bloody useless he was to. Waste of money at a time when the club couldn't afford it. I also remember buying an ageing reserve team striker from Chelsea for a reasonable fee. At first he was a bit slow and useless but then he got his fitness back and then, as they say, the rest is history. Still knocking them in in the lower leagues as well even though he's past 40. I don't even have to name him, such is his stature in our recent history. Now we all hope the latter will apply to Pellicori, but it does seem that some are ready to pass judgement before he even signs for us let alone play in the championship. I would like to ask those who see this as below expectations, what exactly are you expecting? It's not out of character for us to buy out of the lower leagues, regardless off what country those leagues are in for that is irrelevant and like how Parejo is not suited for championship football maybe Pellicori is more suited for championship football than Serie B and could just be the player we need to play up front. I really hope people are not expecting us to buy our way out of the Championship as that will not do for me.

Fair points. IF our manager or scout found him and has uncovered a gem; great. If as some might believe, the impetus for the signing is coming from elsewhere, not so great.
You're right about Sheron. It's the age of the player; fact he's spent his entire career where he has. And our beloved Wally West from QPR Italia hadnt even heard of him. That's a little troubling.
Obviously if he signs, we hope for the best. But expressions of concern (and expressions of optimism and delight) certainly should feature on a messageboard to discuss.
And no. I don't want us buying our way out. But if we'er going to spend money, it would be nice to spend it wisely.

Fair points. IF our manager or scout found him and has uncovered a gem; great. If as some might believe, the impetus for the signing is coming from elsewhere, not so great. The internet rumour monkeys are scoundrels and blackhearted thieves who would no sooner pick your pocket than steal your soul! Don't listen to them! Seriously, I'm OK with whoever buys the players and how much money they can squeeze out of the deal for themselves is purely down to their skills as businessmen and not really any of my business. The idea that certain individuals are seeking to solely buy players that are useless or unwanted in order to line their pockets has, in my opinion, been born out of the mistakes of the past by a man, GP, who is just not that good at what he does but he tries his best and does not have a truly bad bone in his body. He's just an idiot at times. He does get it wrong a lot of the time and sometimes gets it right. If I was in charge he would not be in charge of transfers and I suspect he has to ratify all his suggestions to the board as well as Magic and The Gorm. If that is the case then maybe the board is more influential in this deal than GP and if so good. They have changed tack from last year and are looking at more seasoned professionals as surely they represent more value for money than some young men who have no real desire to prove themselves to us, whilst we suffer at the hands of another teams youth development. This does to me seem like we are learning a few things at least. But expressions of concern (and expressions of optimism and delight) certainly should feature on a messageboard to discuss. Yes. You are right. One thing though about that statement: Is that not what we are doing? I'm not too sure why you felt you had to point it out to me? Don't, no need. I understand the concept of a message board and joined in order to have such discussions.

Ah, the good old days, before I had the veil lifted and the rose tinted glasses removed from my eyes.
Harlow here's a stat question for you: How many minutes has Pelicori played on the field for us?
That was certainly worth paying over the odds and extending the debt for!
If we are going to survive in the Premiership then the last thing we want is the clowns responsible for that deal to be anywhere near our squad.
