Anyone have any idea when he will serve his prison sentence. Or any other aspects of this conundrum that we should know about/

You asked so ........ This whole case is a mess and a mystery - going back to an alleged incident in 2020 that the police looked at and decided no action was necessary. Case closed. It started as accusations that he threw a stone during a bit of a bun fight between 3 different groups queue jumping to get on a coach - and eventually expanded (in the press) to a case of Chair attacking a man with a rock. 4 years later presumably after private complaints (compensation hunting) a court case at a local magistrates came up which Chair and others seemed to have not taken too seriously and he was "sentenced" to 2 years , one of which was suspended. Minimal damages that would only be a couple of weeks wages for Chair were awarded that would make the "rock" accusation seem unlikely. Last public news from months ago was that he had lodged an appeal to clear his name as mistaken identity but no date had been set for the appeal and the courts are so backed with more serious cases up it could be next year if ever. No more news as it is in theory an ongoing legal case or it may have been settled quietly out of court , which maybe the case with his late season improvement in form On top of that the Belgian prisons, despite changes last September, are still so overcrowded that anyone with a sentence of less than 18 months actual jail time serves no time at all . At this point in time I would say innocent until proven guilty or if guilty he will walk free and there is more chance of him being sold than going to prison - unless a prison team needs a good midfielder for a couple of months. Only down side is if this is still hanging around or there is still any chance of him going to prison his transfer value would be lower or zero and the lack of click bait so far about his future could mean things are still outstanding. Meanwhile some Belgian press say we have just tabled a 500k euro bid for 24 year old winger Thibaud Verlinden who would be a Chair replacement and and can play in Willocks position as well . Reportedly just as skilful (in Belgian football) winning promotion this season and set to allow us to sell Chair for 6 million his summer. Belgian click bait I expect. As Verlinden was a bit of a let down in stints with Stoke and Bolton before overseas loans I doubt he would be in the same class although apparently he has done well this season with a few goals and assists. In short there is no smoke without fire but 4 to 5 years after the event I would not lose too much sleep over this or hold my breath waiting for Belgian courts unless the club announce something - if they announce anything at all.

Translation: The facts took place in the summer of 2020, after a kayaking trip on the Semois that started in the Ardennes and ended in Bazeilles, France. A family from East Flanders arrived at the end of a long journey. There were buses ready to take the tired and hungry tourists back to the starting point. While queuing, a commotion arose between the East Flemish people and the family of professional footballer Ilias Chair, starting player at Queens Park Rangers and thirteen-time Moroccan international, who played the consolation final at the 2022 World Cup. There was shouting back and forth, hitting, scratching and pushing and during the confrontation Chair grabbed a large stone with which he hit Niels T.'s head.
The consequences were dramatic, victim T. suffered a skull fracture of 2 centimeters and was in hospital for a while. Because the French Gendarmerie had shown little initiative to get started with the brawl, T. and his family filed a complaint in Belgium. This led to a lawsuit in Antwerp against Ilias Chair at the beginning of this year, who then denied through his lawyer that he was the man who hit the stone. He was sentenced to two years in prison, half of which was suspended. His sister-in-law and a family member also received suspended prison sentences.
New lawyers The case was heard on appeal on Wednesday, and this time the professional footballer was present. The sister-in-law and the relative also came to the appeals court. The defendants and their (new) lawyers said that they had been poorly advised in the first instance by their then joint lawyer. βHe said that everything would be fine, that I did not have to come to Belgium for the trial. I realized too late that I was being given bad advice.β With his new lawyer, master Frank Scheerlinck, Chair changed course and no longer denies being the man who delivered the blow with the stone. In the meantime, he also paid all compensation to the victims, a total of just over 20,000 euros.
βI don't recognize myself in this story. I have never been violent or exposed to violence in my life. I was not raised that way,β Chair read a written statement. βThis dates from four years ago. I was 22 and it was corona times. In the meantime I got married and had a son. I have grown enormously and am aware of my role model. I have to try to always be the best version of myself, for my son, but also for children and young adults worldwide. I will do my best every day to correct this. I would like to apologize again and apologize to the victim.β
Impact of conviction Lawyer Frank Scheerlinck outlined the impact of the conviction by the criminal court in February. βAll hell broke loose and the tabloids in England made it horrible. He had to run from paparazzi and a photo of his wife in a hospital bed was even published.β Scheerlinck asked the court to give Chair a community service order. βHe lives in London, but often comes to Antwerp to visit his family. He will therefore carry out that community service order. My client is at a turning point in his career. He hopes to secure a transfer to a club in the Premier League. That is not possible with a prison sentence or an ankle bracelet.β
Attorney General Ken Witpas had already taken a more lenient stance in his criminal proceedings than the public prosecutor's office at first instance. βI don't have the impression that the defendants are the most aggressive by nature,β he said. For Ilias Chair, the prosecutor believes a suspension (guilty without punishment) is too lenient and requested a community service order of 200 hours. The prosecutor requested 50 hours of community service for the sister-in-law and the family member, both involved in the fight, but does not oppose the suspension requested by their lawyers Joris Van Cauter and Mathias De Daele. The court of appeal will deliver its ruling on July 17.

Time will tell - is he trying to leave now in which case we can now hold out for a larger fee - 0r is this a good line for his defence to spin to get him off lightly - Or is it 6 of one and half a dozen of the other as they are mutually beneficial to him and maybe us.

I did not think this would necessarily be resolved in this window, but it looks like in 4 weeks he will be back in the frame. Although often frustrating to watch, he has been our best, and most valuable player for some time. We all had great hopes for next season if Marti had a full pre-season with his squad, but he has to deal with the following uncertainties: 1) Does he have a windfall from Eze to spend 2) Will there be late bids for his best player (Chair) 3) Will he lose his best defender (Clarke-Salter) - I think yes to that one 4) Is he going to lose Begovic, Willock & Armstrong. So he could have up to Β£25m to spend to create a whole new team, but possibly in very little time, and with several targets already signed up. I hope that it does not end up a supermarket scramble late August. Experiences suggests that we are not good at those.

I did not think this would necessarily be resolved in this window, but it looks like in 4 weeks he will be back in the frame. I think the legal case will end in this window barring more appeals and court schedulesAlthough often frustrating to watch, he has been our best, and most valuable player for some time. TrueWe all had great hopes for next season if Marti had a full pre-season with his squad, but he has to deal with the following uncertainties: 1) Does he have a windfall from Eze to spend See my note on Eze thread - likely last day deal if at all imo2) Will there be late bids for his best player (Chair) Yes but will they be enough to tempt him - only if it is a PL team offering regular football - he wants to play not bench.3) Will he lose his best defender (Clarke-Salter) - I think yes to that one Unsure - he has the talent but has really only had half a season of being fit so a bit of a gamble.4) Is he going to lose Begovic, Willock & Armstrong. Yes to all 3, but the question is when - wait for the Euros to end and the Market will speed up meanwhile waiting time for good offers for those 3So he could have up to Β£25m to spend to create a whole new team, but possibly in very little time, and with several targets already signed up. Agreed but come January.......I hope that it does not end up a supermarket scramble late August. Experiences suggests that we are not good at those. Unfortunately expect a last minute scramble. If we do not have the cash in the bank we can only sign frees or wait for some outgoing sales, likely at the end of the window (which I still say should close the day before the season starts) If we have enough inside info we could always gamble on an Eze sale but what a gamble - if it goes wrong we would be in deep deep FFP trouble.Generally we have played this window well so far. Another week of June to go, the excess and younger players released and replaced with arguably better potential while the senior squad we are still stuck between a rock and a hard place but I expect we have names identified both at home and abroad. Timing of any major cashflow (if any) is beyond our control But I feel we will be better prepared for last minute changes than in previous seasons.
