Interesting statement by the club. My reading of the statement is that they are leaving it open for Chair to play tomorrow. Quote "until legal proceedings are concluded" - is that pre or post appeal legal proceeding? Surely, if the court have indeed confirmed Chair is guilty (then legal proceedings have concluded), and the Club know this, then they have no other choice but to suspend him and therefore he won't play.
I saw that Chair appeals on the grounds that it was not him who did it, rather than appealing the fact his punishment is a 1 year prison sentence. The whole thing seems very odd - surely there were many witnesses in and around the bus that could identify who did it? If not Chair, then who was it if part of Chair's group, or was it a complete random person involved?

My guess would be that there is a fair degree of sensationalism associated with this judgement and subsequent coverage. There is much that none of us understand: The incident happened in France - and yet the case has been heard in Belgium. It seems that it was not taken terribly seriously by the defendants, as yesterday was the first time that they had attended the court - and they 'rocked' up with new legal representation. If there was a bus load of passengers, and people waiting at the stop, you would think that there would be witnesses. The French Police recorded the incident but did not progress any further. The weapon has gone from a stone to a rock through the reporting - but in any case, the damage inflicted was considerable. Ilias claiming mistaken identity after 4 years would need to tally with his statement at the time to have any weight - witnesses though again would be key. It is possible that as the wealthiest of the group that he is the one worth pursuing - but if it was not him who inflicted the damage, who is Ilias saying it was? The average gap between hearing and appeal in Belgium courts is 6 months - so not unusual to be released on 'bail'. He would be free to earn a living during that period. If the victim just wants money, then presumably the parties can negotiate ahead of the appeal. But this is so QPR! Meanwhile, this is one translation of the original reporting:
UPDATEAntwerp citizen and professional football player Ilias Chair (26) has been sentenced to two years in prison, one of which is effective. He must also pay damages of 15,600 euros in damages to Niels T., a man from Herzele. The men were on holiday in Northern France in the summer of 2020, but their families faced each other in the drumming at a bus stop, after a game of kayaking. “ There was one objective witness: why was the French bus driver never questioned? ” In any case, Ilias Chair appeals.

Hard to know whats going on. He has said its not him that threw the rock? Bet he plays against Leicester. After that your guess is as good as mine. Think it happened quite a while ago.

Lots unknown so no use speculating Fact is until Late last year anyone sentenced to less than 2 years in jail in Belgium usually served no time at all due to overcrowded prisons. Repeat offenders being an exception.
Now the law has been changed so anyone sentenced can serve time but for less than 2 year terms they either serve 30% (4 months in Chairs case) but also they can make a simple request to serve no time at all. The decision being made by a local magistrate.
The whole story with 4 year delay, no action by French police etc etc plus very low compensation if the injury was that bad. Long way to go on this one but unlikely to impact Chair this season or even this year even if guilty and appeals taking at least 6 months to be heard.

Its not affecting his game so the longer the appeal the better :-) This all smells very fishy to me. I am not saying Illias is innocent but if it was such an issue surely it would have been dealt with years ago.
