QPR Official Site - July 1, 1999 - SUCCESS THE SOLUTION
With Rangers boss, Gerry Francis, striving to strengthen his squad in time for the season's curtain-raiser, he believes the club needs to be able to achieve success on the pitch to help solve the club's financial problems.
As the Loftus Road supremo aims to restore the club to its lofty heights of a few seasons ago, Francis thinks a run of good results will help lift the Rangers fans.
He said: "From a supporter's, and from my point of view, we want success on the pitch, and we need to get that success and sustain it to be able to compete, and get back to the financial position when I left four or five years ago.
"We were a good Premiership side, and the top London club for one season, and financially, we were in good order.
"But when I came back, we were bottom of the division, and financially, not in very good order."
While Francis bids to add to his squad, the possibility of selling the side's better players lurks around the corner.
"I don't think it is the best thing in the world to sell our better players, but we need to balance the books, and get in a position where we are not losing money every week," said Francis.
"Certainly, the two things don't go together very well because it is a vicious circle, but at the end of the day, we need to get ourselves back on our feet."
As the manager's quest to strengthen the squad continues, Francis is hopeful that the club will be in a better position than last year.
"I'm optimistic for next year, and I want to be forward looking and see if we can have a good start.
"Certainly, if we can steer clear of the unfortunate injuries we had at the end of last season, then this season should be brighter."
QPR Official Site - July 2, 1999 HARD WORK THE KEY
As the Rangers players prepare to return for pre-season training on Monday, manager Gerry Francis is placing the emphasis on ensuring the squad is mentally and physically fit.
With plenty of hard work in store for the returning players, Francis is aiming to boost the players' fitness levels in time for the season's curtain raiser.
He said: "Pre-season is very important, and it is a vital element for all players, and I think if you miss one, you always feel you are not at your peak.
"The most important thing is to make sure the players are fit, and mentally right, and focused for the start of the season."
While winning the pre-season friendlies helps to breed confidence within a group of players, Francis is more intent on bringing the squad to its peak in time for the opening game of the new campaign.
"Pre-season games and training is about getting yourself prepared for the thing that counts, which is the start of the season," said Francis.
"Although I like to win pre-season games, the most important thing for the players is for them to be right for when it counts.
"You can win every pre-season game, but it's no good if you lose your opening game of the season."
The Loftus Road boss is also determined to steer the club away from the relegation battles which have blighted the club over the past two seasons.
Francis said: "I certainly don't want to be in relegation trouble again, and I'm sure that the players and the supporters don't, so we need to prepare ourselves right.
"I think the division is tougher this year with more quality. It is going to be tough, but hopefully we will be at a different end of the table."
