Timely, as Author Vic Gibbons has sadly passed away within the last 2 weeks. Reg Allen, Monday March 29 1954, There was a testimonial Match held for Reg, QPR 1 Man United 4 on his behalf. Were any of our older members on here at that game? And did they ever see Reg play for either QPR or Man United?? Reg passed away 3rd April 1976 aged 56. His story is an interesting one and I can see why Vic pursued it for some years. It's a shame that his latter years are so sketchy. I believe Vic, himself was suffering from Cancer & Dementia in a rest home. That he got his book published before these events is a blessing. 58 pages of good reading. RIP Reg and also to you Vic.

I saw Reg Allen play many times. Also saw him shopping in Wembley High Rd. He was a dapper dresser.

Reg Allen was nine years before my time at Loftus Rd so I never saw him play. He was a great keeper. The greatest of his day. He would have played for England many times but mental health issues overcame him. He did however play a major part in Manchester Utd winning the League Championship in 1951 following his record transfer from the R's before he had to quit the game.
As a Kid in the late 1950's adult QPR supporters used to tell me sad anecdotes about his strange behaviour in public. Sometimes seen wandering around local streets in West London talking to himself. A lost soul indeed in the end. Also he may have been an outpatient at the Hanwell mental health institution.

He was captured and a prisoner of War by the Nazis. He played in inter squad gams before being released. I don't want to mention the illness he had, it was quite nasty and progressive. His final illness in hospital was Tabes Dorsalis. You can look that up.

I know it was a different era to that of Phil Parkes and David Seaman and Ron Springett but y'know it could be argued that Reg Allen was right up there as one of the greatest of R's keepers.

Vic's book is pretty good on him. These day's, the right medicine and he would have been ok and under control so to speak.

My mum and dad were at Reg's testimonial in 1954 - the year after they married. It was the only football match my mum ever attended. Sadly I was never able to get hold of a copy of Vic Gibbon's book on Reg. If anyone has a spare copy do please let me know.
