I watched the ‘highlights’ again and although on another day we could have got something from the game, there are players that I don’t think are good enough in our squad.
What with the Covid loss of revenue and the potential loss of up to 3 key players on top of those already departed, we need quite a few new players on very limited revenue.
But what are the priorities?
Goalkeeper – Both Lumley and Kelly seem to have a big mistake in them. Kelly’s distribution is superior though. Shame that we could not have a look at Dieng in these few games. We may well sell Dieng to Birmingham for the cash, but as it stands, I do not think we have a reliable keeper for next season.
Full Backs - Rangel can only be cover next season (if retained). Kane has been a big disappointment. Better going forward than defending, but his game has really gone off. Kakay is still an unknown to me and last night playing in a 3 at the back still did not tell me anything. Manning played well last night when pushed forward but we have conceded too many goals from the spot of last night’s second goal. Another unchallenged shot. What is Manning’s best position? I have not been very impressed with Wallace and his injury record over the last 3 years means he cannot be first choice next season
Centre Back – Hall will need to be replaced, I think he will be missed. Barbet can be very good, but he has been very careless since the restart. But I suspect that he will be first choice. We have Gubbins and Mastrson to come through as well. Cameron in reserve.
Wingers – If Bright leaves and I think he will, then we have Shadipo and Smythe. Both have had long term injuries this years, but hard to judge without a run in the team. Bright will be a huge loss though. It would not surprise me to see Clarke back here next year, but Warburton does not seem to find a role for him at present, but without Bright, he could feature I suppose.
Holding Midfield – Ball has been a pleasant surprise. I cannot work out Cameron’s best position because he gives the ball away a lot. Owens injury is a big set back for him, I thought he may have broken through by now. But he has been out for a long time and so we are light in the DM area now
Creative Midfield - I have finally lost patience with Amos. I would rather see a junior play there than Amos now. Eze will be a huge loss, but at least Chair has a chance to make the number 10 his own. Other than that, it is juniors!
Striker – I don’t think Hugill will be here next season and Oteh is only going to be back-up. We have Ramkilde available, but he has not even been named as a sub, so may be a way off. We have Charlie Kendall coming through the junior. We need strikers.
Pretty lean isn’t it?
It may be that the only players that we retain for next year are:
Lumley, Kelly, Wallace, Barbet, Masterson, Gubbins, Kakay, Kane, Ball, Cameron, Shadipo, Smythe, Oteh and Chair.
That would be 10 short for a 24 man squad. I hope we have some deals lined up!
