I think Smithies is definitely overvalued by us QPR fans, but that’s probably the same for most clubs fans. Rewind a couple of years ago and lots of people, myself being one of them, felt Ingram had the higher ceiling of the two and was the most likely to end up in the Prem. Smithies proved his worth, though, but one of those two had to go this summer and Smithies was the most likely as he was getting regular game time. Maybe we could have squeezed a bit more out of the deal, but some of the figures being suggested by fans on here and other QPR message boards are a tad unrealistic, methinks. Unless several teams were coming in for him this was really a buyers market so you have to take what you can get. The GK position is one where we have plenty of good options, though, so hopefully now the money can be reinvested into the areas we do need strengthening in, like central defence. Precisely I think some are forgetting that Smithies has never played in the premier league so no premier league team is going to stump up the sorts of fees some fans think they should. We were in the unique position of having 3 very capable goalkeepers. we now have 2 with another coming through the ranks and some cash to spend, hopefully on our defence. Cardiff fans actually think he’s going to be their back up keeper. If that’s the case, then they wouldn’t be paying £8m for that anyway. Be interesting to see if he starts the season as their first choice keeper.

Smithies almost certainly will be Cardiff's backup keeper so the price is about right IMO

If he was going to go to the premiership, I'd rather he returned to Huddersfield than Cardiff. That aside he was undersold for a pathetic amount and we're going to lose most of that to Huddersfield, a great bit of salemanship by QPR on this one. Remind me not to buy a used car from them. If you tried, I heard they'd recommend CarGiant ...

Smithies almost certainly will be Cardiff's backup keeper so the price is about right IMO If that's the case, I agree. Shame though - he doesn't seem like someone who'd go to sit on the bench somewhere, but then maybe he fancies his chances at nicking the number 1 spot. And of course, it's a very different thought process when you've got a young family and you're being offered your first shot at Premier League football. Absolutely immense for us, wish him all the best.

Ha that is very true, clearly not adverse to the challenge of breaking through, then. Though I presume he must have been sold the idea that Green wasn't going to be there long term with his wages and that infamous element of Green's appearances triggering a contract renewal. Memories of Green's PR getting him in that big roll neck for a big soapy massage in the Daily Mail, bleating about how hard done by he was when Smithies was bang in form and took his place on merit. Agree it was a bit of a waste. Either way, like with so many of these things, it's so hard to know exactly what happened. I'm trying to put a brave face on it - regardless of how small the reported transfer figure is, it's still a player we brought in and developed who's gone for around twice as much as we bought him for with two decent keepers waiting in the wings. If that money goes towards assuaging FFP and puts money in the pot for a half decent CB then so be it. Infinitely better than pissing it away on Julio Cesar.

Why Cardiff City you ask?
How many other Premier League clubs have come knocking for him in the last 3 seasons?
Rightly or wrongly, Premier League clubs, many of whom we know have mediocre keepers, haven't been interested in him.
Even Huddersfield Town, who could have afforded him when they got promoted, didn't want to know.
The harsh reality is that the rest of the football world doesn't see Smithies in the same light as us QPR fans do.
It's up to him to go out now and prove the teams that didn't pay him any respect wrong. If he does then hopefully we, like Huddersfield, have a nice sell on clause written into that new contract he's just signed.
