1st start for Kakay Assuming: Ingram Furlong Babtiste Bidwell Kakay Wszolek Luongo Scowen Freeman Sylla Smyth Central defence the obvious concern but not much choice at the moment. Is this Ned's 2nd or 3rd game out?

2 more meaningless games to go.
Hard to get too annoyed about this loss as it really makes no difference to our season.

It was hard to leave Griffin Park feeling aggrieved, Brentford are clearly a notch or three above us and played some excellent football in the first half. Our makeshift defence were pulled all over the place but, with Baptiste defending like his life depended on it, did really well to keep them down to one goal.
The second half was a different matter, we upped our work rate, chased and harried far better and Brentford were rattled. The raking cross field passes which caused us problems in the first half went straight into touch, the through balls for their strikers went harmlessly to Smithies and the fancy passing moves dried up. In short, we brought them down to our level. They had a couple of minutes where they pulled themselves out of this slump which resulted in a magnificent save by Smithies and their winner.
Kakay, making his full debut, didn't look out of place. It is great to see another academy graduate playing for the first team. If I recall correctly, he joined QPR when he was 7 - another of Steve Gallen proteges. Darnell looks too slight to play in the centre of defence but reads the game well and leaps like Paul Parker. I suspect a more physical team would give him problems, but he is growing in confidence all the time.
I don't think that our midfield has functioned properly since the switch to four at the back and today was no different. I think they get too stretched and therefore can't play the nice triangles which were so good to watch at the beginning of the season.
Wszolek is a bit of an issue for me. His support of the fullback behind him is excellent, but he steadfastly refuses to take on his opponent and will not cross. Sylla and Smith are not ball players, cross the damn thing, give them a chance.
We were pretty surprised that Ingram was allowed to carry on after his blow to the head and to make a penalty save immediately after being hauled back onto his feet shows his character, even if it was a poor penalty. He hadn't looked all that convincing beforehand, especially his distribution. Smithies did seem to settle down the defence, perhaps he simply communicates with them better. I expect Ingram to move on this summer.
Nothing really to get too excited or too upset about. We expected to lose, we lost. As ever, we fought to the end, but we are not creative enough. We don't move the ball quickly enough and resort to pumping it up to Sylla or Smith far too readily, but I've seen us play a lot worse.
