Evelyn Lintott and all those other R's that were involved, some not returning. They will always be remembered and held up in high esteme for the gift they gave for us all. Just a shame a few generals etc, based back home in London, didn't get to enjoy the front line action. They might have abandoned those ridiculous all in a line charges that saw so many brave men from all sides, being killed so un-necessairly.

Interesting to note the date on the Lintott photo. Sorry, the penny hasn't dropped with me (although I am becoming progressively more brain dead these days!) Please enlighten. Greatest respect to all those brave guys who gave so much.

When World War I was declared in 1914, Lintott was one of the first players to sign up for army service and joined the West Yorkshire Regiment's 15th Battalion, known as the Leeds Pals. He was promoted to lieutenant and became the first professional footballer to hold a commission. He was killed in action on 1 July 1916, the first day on the Somme, which was the opening day of the Battle of Albert and the first phase of the British and French offensive that became known as the Battle of the Somme. Lintott lost his life along with more than 19,000 other men.

Greatest respect to all those brave guys who gave so much. 19 November 1915 - The battle of the Somme kicked off on July 1st 1916. Meaning this young man had seen some serious action for a long time before the biggest action of them all.

It's hard to imagine seeing the numbers in reality. you look out over the field after that first day and there's physically thousands of bodies stacking up. No wonder some suffered shell shiock and trauma. And then they lined up and shot for cowardess. There was no cowardess, the guy demanding they were shot should have been lined up in front of the wall, not the victims.
Sorry, I digress. I have issues with how man spends most of the day designing ways in how to mutilate and kill each other rather than explore the universe and find cures for disease.

We had hundreds of people turn out at the war memorial in Stevenage which was great. Unfortunately just down the road at Letchworth the poppies were all vandalised And men died so that arseholes like that could vendelize their recognition. Sometimes you really have to wonder why, especially about this new generation born after 1980.
