Report: Limerick Come From Behind To Beat QPR U21s
First-half goals from Michael Leahy and Rory Gaffney cancelled out Bruno Andrade’s early penalty as Limerick came from behind to beat Queens Park Rangers Under-21s in a friendly at the UL Bowl on Tuesday evening.
Andrade shot the visitors in front in the opening minutes but Limerick fought back to level through Leahy’s close-range finish before the midway point of the half, just moments after captain Shane Duggan was denied by a fine save.
Leahy then cleared Sphati’s effort off the line, and within moments of that scare, Limerick hit the front when Gaffney took advantage of Brandon Conley’s slip-up by punishing the defender with a cool finish.
Ian Turner and Sphati both went close before the break, the latter’s fine free-kick whistling just past the top corner, with a much-changed Limerick going on to close out the win in a quiet second half.
Superblues manager Martin Russell included in his starting XI goalkeeper Ali Abass, defender Michael Leahy and trialist Shane O’Connor – the 24-year-old former Ipswich Town, Cork City and Shamrock Rovers defender/winger.
Other than that, it was a familiar looking Limerick lineup, as they went up against former Republic of Ireland Under-21 International Steve Gallen’s side.
But it was the English youngsters who started the brighter and they were denied by a fine save from Abass in the opening seconds. Soon, though, they were in front when Andrade was fouled in the box and he stood up to convert from the spot and break the deadlock.
QPR went close to making it 2-0 shortly after, just failing to connect at the back post, but Limerick were back in it on 20 minutes.
Duggan saw his shot from the edge of the box brilliantly tipped over by Aaron Lennox, and despite denying the hosts twice from Ian Turner’s resulting corner, Leahy eventually prodded to the net from close in.
Past the half-hour, Leahy did well to get back on the line to clear Sphati’s shot after the striker had beaten Abass. And then Conley sloppily conceded possession to Gaffney in his own half, with the striker bearing down on goal and curling a clinical finish to the bottom corner.
On 39 minutes, Limerick went close to extending their lead when Robbie Williams’ left-wing cross was met by the head of the in-rushing Turner at the back post but his effort went agonisingly wide.
Moments later, captain Josh Hunt-Laurent headed over from a free-kick, and shortly before the break, Sphati’s set-piece from 25-yards almost shaved the outside of the upright, as Limerick took a narrow advantage into the break.
Then came a number of changes for the Shannonsiders, with trialist forward Shane Clarke among those introduced.
But it was a second half that produced little in the way of goalmouth action. Still, there were chances, with Barry Sheedy denied by the ‘keeper on 63 minutes after connecting with Garbhán Coughlan’s low cross while George Butler curled wide at the other end on 70 minutes after robbing possession deep in Limerick territory.
Limerick FC thanks the University of Limerick for hosting us and QPR for a sporting friendly; we wish Steve Gallen and his players all the best in their forthcoming season.
