PUBLISHED 15:02 25th September 2013 by @officialqpr Uruguayan striker signs short-term contract in W12 ... URUGUAYAN striker Javier Chevanton has signed a short-term contract at Loftus Road. The experienced front-man – a free agent following his release from Italian side Lecce at the end of last season – has been training with the R’s in recent weeks and has now put pen to paper on a three month deal. Chevanton, 33, has won 22 caps for his country, scoring seven goals. R’s boss Harry Redknapp told http://www.qpr.co.uk: “With the injuries we’ve had to Bobby and AJ, we’re really short of options in that department. “Javier has spent time with us and integrated into the group very well. “He arrives with a good pedigree and gives us a much-needed extra option in attack.” Chevanton, whose contract runs until December 24th, said: “I am very happy to be here, working with a good manager like Harry Redknapp, for a team which is currently top of the Championship with huge ambitions to return to the Premier League. “I am really looking forward to the challenge of playing in England. I have scored goals all around Europe and I am confident I can continue that record with QPR. “When I was younger, I loved watching English football. The atmosphere here is great and when the chance came to join QPR, it was all I wanted. “I have a great will-to-win and I can’t wait to do my best for the club and fall in love with the fans.” The deal is subject to the player receiving international clearance. .......and www.qpr.co.uk/news/article/250913-chevanton-in-profile-1076444.aspx CHEVANTON: IN PROFILE PUBLISHED 15:01 25th September 2013 by @officialqpr We take a closer look at QPR’s new signing … JAVIER Chevanton began his career with local club Danubio in Montevideo, Uruguay. His staggering strike-rate of 49 goals in just 57 appearances led to huge interest in his services and in the summer of 2001, aged 21, the diminutive forward was signed by Italian Serie A side Lecce. Chevanton continued to find the net on a regular basis but his 12 goals in 27 appearances were unable to prevent his new club from suffering relegation to Serie B. Despite reported interest elsewhere, Chevanton remained loyal to Lecce and netted an impressive 18 goals in 30 games to help them make an immediate return to the top flight of Italian football. And in 2003/04, with Lecce finishing mid-table, Chevanton further enhanced his reputation as an instinctive goalscorer with 19 Serie A goals, making him the fourth highest scorer in the division behind Andriy Shevchenko (24), Alberto Gilardino (23) and Francesco Totti (20). After three hugely successful seasons in Italy - which left him as Lecce’s all-time top goalscorer -Chevanton joined French giants Monaco in July 2004. Despite a season beset by injury problems, he still managed ten goals for Les Rouge et Blanc. In 2005/06, squad rotation with the likes of Christian Vieri and Emmanuel Adebayor led to a limited number of appearances for Chevanton but, such was his knack for goals, he still netted ten times to make him the club’s top goalscorer that season. Following his spells in Italy and France, Spain was the next port of call for Chevanton when he signed for Sevilla in August 2006. He subsequently enjoyed a loan period with Atalanta before two more spells with Lecce, which sandwiched a brief time with Argentinian side Colón de Santa Fe. Last season, Chevanton made 16 appearances for Lecce, netting ten goals. On the international stage, the 33 year-old has made 22 appearances for Uruguay, scoring seven times.

Oh well, no high balls to him, he's short. 33 years old. Be interesting to see if he still has it and if so, will the club extend his stay till June?

Or if indeed he ever did have it, as far as English football goes. Good luck to the old shortarse, might be a Kevin Phillips, you never know! SO TF was right, two strikers, one 17, the other 34. Somewhere in between might have been worth a go but never mind eh!

Pleased we have someone. Have been looking him up and he seems solid with no reputation for injury (that I've found anyway. It's odd that he's been training with us for weeks and no ones noticed! Perhaps he'll be a bit like Suarez but without the spitting and biting etc.

Seems like a solid move, still don't understand why we can't give Hitchcock a chance, but this guy is a proven goalscorer. Looks like a good temporary replacement for Andy Johnson. Not sure why we didn't just sign him for the season, is Harry that in love with Zamora?

Football ItaliaJavier Chevanton rejected a January switch to the Premiership in order to stay with Lega Pro side Lecce! Queens Park Rangers and West Ham were ready to take the Uruguayan on loan, but the striker committed his future to the Via Del Mare outfit instead. “Harry Redknapp and Sam Allardyce were ready to take him with their eyes shut,” agent Pasquale Bruno told the Gazzetta dello Sport. “I have an excellent relationship with both and they were ready to accept him on loan for six months when I offered him. “I spoke with the player, but, after a night of reflection, he told me that he didn’t want to leave Lecce.” It is being suggested that the South American, who earns just €1,000 a month, would have been handed a £15,000 a month contract in England. The 32-year-old is in his third spell at Lecce, a club who were demoted to the Lega Pro in the summer as part of the betting match-fixing probe. football-italia.net/30699/chevanton-rejected-prem-offersHe's getting younger!

As the offie only mentions International clearance I assume that he has a European passport to avoid us having to apply for a work permit,.
We can't lose too much on a three month deal if he fails to work out. Good luck to him, anywhere close to five goals in this period will do me.
I bet none of us would have come up with either of this weeks signings as TF's two forwards!

Clearly his best is over but he's only slight older than Johnson and it short term...if he's a success Harry will be seen as a genius & if he's rubbish he'll disappear into the recesses of our mind very quickly

Oh well what? Seems like a decent punt to me, on a player that's done it at a much higher level than the Championship, sounds like the right sort as well...!!!

Given the options we have; and the options out there, and the length, I see it as no problem... But in January, PLEASE sign one or two real class strikers... I am surprised though given that he didn't play for Tottenham or West Ham...

Come on Maude:
Is it really fair to hold Fernandes to what he may have said?

Sounds like redknapps plan has come out on top.....pretty sure fernandes wanted and promised the opposite....maybe thats why fernandes has been quite lately, and that sarcastic twitter remark about two strikers and hatful of goals is a sign of bitterness. Whoever goes to that fans forum has got enough questions to ask about why we are not trying to build a stable side to improve upon if wr get in the prem. You dont need board members present to have a good old moan

Redknapp has the same brief as Warnock, who also did not build a squad to compete in the premier league, he had some luck and got promoted, at the mo, Redknapp's doing the same although we haven't played a side with strikers yet.
What Redknapp has done is remove those players perceived to be premier league. Whatever division you are in in football, you build a team to compete. You cannot build a side to compete in a division you are not in, be that higher or lower!
