Midfielder pens long-term contract
Highly-rated youngster Michael Doughty has signed a new long-term contract at Loftus Road.
The 19 year-old midfielder has penned a three-year extension until the summer of 2016.
Doughty, who featured regularly throughout the R’s pre-season tours of Asia and Germany, expressed his delight at putting pen to paper, telling http://www.qpr.co.uk: “It’s a great feeling.
“It’s nice to know the manager wants me here as part of the long-term future.
“QPR are a really progressive club and I’ve really enjoyed being part of the first team set-up during pre-season.
“It’s a really exciting time for everyone here. The potential is endless and the whole club is geared towards a bright future, on and off the pitch.”
Doughty joined QPR as a schoolboy at the age of 14.
He featured at all age groups for the R’s, before making his Wales international bow at under-19 level.
Doughty spent time on loan at Crawley Town and Aldershot Town last term and will now be looking to make his mark at Loftus Road.
“Going out on loan was a big part of my development,” he said.
“Getting a taste of senior first team football was just what I needed, but it’s nice to feel part of the set-up here now.
“In the short term, I want to break through into the squad in any of the competitions that I can. Obviously the manager will have his opinions of what he thinks is best for me, and I’m sure we’ll sit down and discuss those over the coming weeks.”
Whilst another stint on loan is clearly an option for Doughty, the new under-21 league set-up could also prove hugely beneficial for the Westminster-born midfielder.
“There was a real need for a structure like this for the younger players to have a regular run of competitive games and this new league provides that,” he said.
“That’s something that can help bridge the gap between youth team and first team football, which allows players like myself to get good amounts of game-time.”
