QPR chief accuses Ashley Young of diving for Manchester United's opening goal at Old Trafford
QPR chief executive Phil Beard has labelled Ashley Young a diver after he won the penalty that resulted in Manchester United's opening goal at Old Trafford
Young appeared to go down easily under pressure from Shaun Derry, who was shown a straight red card before Wayne Rooney tucked in the first-half spot-kick.
Beard then likened Young to British Olympic diver Tom Daley in a Twitter post that was re-tweeted by QPR majority shareholder Tony Fernandes.
"Difficult to take after watching numerous replays but Ashley Young could partner Tom Daley at the Olympics #QPR," he wrote.
QPR director Ruben Emir Gnanalingam was also aggrieved, pointing to the fact Young also appeared to be offside in the lead-up to the incident, adding: "It was offside and a dive by Young! Alex Ferguson's luck with calls continues. Just wish there was video technology!"
Fernandes replied to that tweet, saying: "Awful. Spoilt another game."
He then added: "Thank you to all the manchester united (sic) fans for their honesty. Have received 150 tweets saying he was offside and was never a penalty."

Goals from Wayne Rooney and Paul Scholes gave Manchester United a 2-0 victory over ten-man QPR at Old Trafford.
In a match not without controversy, United were in front thanks to a disputed penalty on 15 minutes, after Shaun Derry clashed with Ashley Young.
Video replays showed that there was minimal contact between the two, while Young was in an offside position.
Derry, meanwhile, was sent off by referee Mr Mason, before Rooney stepped up to smash home from 12 yards.
The R's were brave in the second period but saw their challenge effectively ended in the 68th minute, after Scholes's outstanding 20-yard effort flew into the bottom left-hand corner.
Mindful of the fact that QPR were set to contest three Barclays Premier League matches in the space of just six days, Hughes made two changes to his starting XI for the trip to Manchester.
Akos Buzsaky and Jay Bothroyd came into the side, replacing Joey Barton and Bobby Zamora respectively.
Rangers did, however, stick with the 4-5-1 formation deployed in our 2-1 win over Arsenal last weekend, with Paddy Kenny in goal.
Nedum Onuoha, Anton Ferdinand, Clint Hill and Taye Taiwo began in defence.
Buzsaky, Derry and Samba Diakite started in central midfield, with Jamie Mackie and Adel Taarabt occupying the wings.
Bothroyd played the lone striker role in attack.
United made a dominant start and went close inside five minutes, after Rooney's free-kick was deflected wide when Hill originally felled Danny Wellbeck 25 yards from goal.
Rooney soon went closer, this time forcing a stunning save from Kenny, again from a set-piece situation.
Controversy sparked on 14 minutes, after the home side were awarded a disputed penalty - and Rangers were reduced to ten men.
Rooney's through pass into Young saw the latter go down under minimal contact from Derry in the box.
Incidentally, videos replays also showed that Young was in an offside position.
Derry was subsequently given his marching orders, before Rooney stepped up a minute later to slam home from the spot.
Despite being a man light, the R's - who admittedly had to endure a constant stream of United pressure - did settle.
Taarabt went close for the visitors on 21 minutes, seeing his deflected shot tipped over the bar by David De Gea.
Three minutes later, the Reds missed a golden chance to double their lead, after Young somehow nodded Rooney's cross wide from close range.
At the other end, Taarabt forced a fine last-ditch block from Jonny Evans - who the Moroccan originally dispossessed - before Kenny gathered an audacious attempted lob by Rooney.
Rangers were having to hang on just before the break, but did enough to keep the margin to just a single goal.
Wellbeck headed over from Antonio Valencia's cross seven minutes before half-time, while Patrice Evra saw an effort trickle inches wide of the right-hand post.
Scholes then saw his first-half stoppage time attempt fly just past the upright.
United thought they'd extended their advantage two mintues after half-time, after Welbeck touched home from close range. The England ace's strike, however, was ruled out for offside.
Welbeck was again involved just two minutes later, blazing over following Young's clever back-heel.
Despite the numerical disadvantage, QPR showed magnificent heart throughout and went close on 56 minutes, with the energetic Diakite seeing a shot deflected just wide of goal.
Rangers had Kenny to thank for keeping them in the contest on 59 minutes.
Scholes freed Rafael, before the United full-back's close-range blast was somehow tipped on to the bar by Kenny.
And the R's keeper was at it again soon after, twice saving excellently well from Welbeck.
The contest was settled when United added a second on 68 minutes.
Rafael benefited from Taarabt's mis-control, before Scholes's wonderful drive from 20 yards sailed into the bottom left-hand corner.
Manchester United: De Gea, Evra, Evans, Ferdinand, Rafael (Jones 74), Valencia, Carrick, Scholes (Cleverley 74), Rooney, Young (Giggs 62), Welbeck.
Subs: Amos, Park Ji-sung, Pogba, Hernandez.

Rio: We're on a roll
Rio Ferdinand knows an important win when he sees one as the Reds defender continues to chase what would be his sixth Premier League winner's medal.
And while United's victory on Easter Sunday may not have been the prettiest, or as emphatic as it could have been against ten-man QPR, it maintained the champions' juggernaut of a winning streak. United have now won eight league games in a row, while rivals Manchester City mustered seven in their best sequence back in late September, October and early November.
"We didn't think about getting into this position [clear league leaders] but we never doubted ourselves. We never doubted we could put a good run together and win games," said Ferdinand, recalling the time when United trailed City in the title race.
"That's what you need to do, you have to get momentum at this stage of the season. That's the most important thing, making sure you get a good run together and win all your remaining games. We've ticked one off today and hopefully we can keep on going."
Ferdinand feels United gained an early break against his brother Anton's team, when QPR skipper Shaun Derry conceded a penalty and was controversially sent off. Rio also admits there might have been more goals than one in each half from Wayne Rooney and Paul Scholes.
"I was surprised at the red card but I've not really seen it enough to comment. I don't know how much contact there was," said Rio.
"Considering they had a man sent off quite early in the game, we would like to have scored a few more. But a clean sheet and a couple of goals - we
would have taken that before the game."
The know-how of Rooney, Scholes and Ferdinand - to name just three seasoned campaigners - is helping the current side to close in on the club's twentieth league title. But Rio says everyone from Ryan Giggs on 906 appearances to Tom Cleverley on 12 is playing a big part.
"Experience is huge. We've been in this position before and that counts for a lot. We know what it takes to get over the finishing line first and we've got to use all that experience to make sure we do it again.
"The young players are all putting their two-pence worth in as well and it's a group effort, it's a team effort. Everyone's contribution counts."
Rio Ferdinand was talking to Sky Sports.

Sir Alex: QPR’s dismay understandable, but Derry had to go
Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson said he understood QPR’s frustration after their 2-0 defeat at Old Trafford.
Rangers manager Mark Hughes was angered by the decision of referee Lee Mason to award a penalty against the visitors and send off Shaun Derry following a challenge on Ashley Young.
But although Ferguson conceded that Young was in an offside position, he insisted his player did not dive to earn a spot-kick and therefore Derry had to be dismissed.
“Ashley was a yard offside so I can understand Mark [Hughes] being angry and disappointed at that. You see these kinds of decisions every week though,” he said.
“The boy’s just got a little tug on Young, not a great deal but enough to get us the penalty. And unfortunately he was the last defender and had to be sent off.
“The sending-off didn’t help us at all. I was actually more confident before that in terms of the speed of our play and the movement of the team which was very good.”
