The European Football Supporters’ Award 2009
National Association of Disabled Supporters are honoured at Wembley
The jury of the European Football Supporters Award (EFSA) has nominated the British National Association of Disabled Supporters (NADS).
The prize was awarded at the Wembley last Saturday prior to the England-Slovakia international friendly, which England won 4-0.
The choice of Wembley for this ceremony underlines the credit that all of the leading federations now give to the initiative taken in 2005 by the City of Brussels and the Belgian public relations agency, Dialogic.
Since its creation, the prize has also benefitted from the considerable support of UEFA, who recognises the importance of the role of supporters in football stadiums and fully appreciates the originality of an award that encourages ethics in sport.
Last year, its President, Michel Platini, congratulated the organisers for their accomplishments. That was also put into perspective by the spokesman of EFSA, Philippe Housiaux, during the dinner offered by the Football Association to 200 selected invites in Wembley’ s Royal suite.
Before handing over the trophy to Joyce Cook, chair of NADS, Philippe Housiaux reminded the award’s objective: honour supporters for such behaviour as friendship In the stadiums, fraternisation between supporters of the two teams, respect for the opponent and the referee, the fight against all expressions of racism and xenophobia and condemnation of all physical or verbal violence.
This time, the jury has recognised the spirit of solidarity. It has therefore rewarded an association composed of volunteers, The National Association of Disabled Supporters (NADS) which represents disabled supporters in the United Kingdom. Their aim is to ensure disabled fans are treated equally and can enjoy the game alongside their fellow fans.
After his welcome speech, the Chairman of the Football Association, Lord David Triesman, congratulated warmly Joyce Cook and her team for the tremendous efforts she and her team has made in favour of those motivated, admirable football fans.
