If he's serious.... Teamtalk Hughes: No major overhaul Monday 16th January 2012 15:46 Hughes: Looking at gradual improvement Mark Hughes said there was no need to make big changes on or off the field at QPR after watching their deficiencies exposed at first hand. Hughes' first game in charge ended in defeat on Sunday when his new side lost 1-0 at Newcastle to end the weekend in the Premier League relegation zone. It was a 10th match without a win for the London side and they cannot afford to make that 11 if they are to avoid crashing out of the FA Cup on Tuesday night. Sunday's game highlighted the problems at both ends of the field that cost Neil Warnock his job and have seen QPR make bids for striker Andrew Johnson and defenders Alex and Christopher Samba. They have also been linked with a host of other players but Hughes was prepared to be patient when it came to ins and outs during the January transfer window. Hughes, who was without key quartet Joey Barton, Adel Taarabt, Armand Traore and Alejandro Faurlin, said: "There are areas we can improve, that's obvious. We were missing players. "And as the games come thick and fast, we would hope to welcome back some players and, if we can, bring players into the club who will help us. "But it's difficult in January, we understand that. It's important that if you do target players, they have to come in and make an impact. "It's important that we improve our goals-for column because that is hindering us at the moment. "But we can't just isolate one unit of the team, it has to be a collective thing and if we improve all areas of the team then that will enable us to get in those positions more often, and then maybe our average conversion rate won't hinder us as much as it is maybe at the moment. "In terms of futures, we are looking to make Queens Park Rangers better - obviously, that's the aim of everybody - and we want as many of the players who are at the club now to be part of that." With barely 48 hours between Sunday's game and Tuesday's FA Cup third-round replay against MK Dons, Hughes admitted he would be forced to make some changes - but not many. "We will have to make a few changes, but it won't be as wholesale as possibly people would think because it's important that I still get to know what I have got," he said. "We have got a quick turnaround, so very quickly we have to understand who will be available. "I need to use players who maybe haven't had much of an influence. "So that gives me another opportunity to understand what I have got at the football club. "The timing of it is a little bit unfortunate because of the (possible tube) strike on the Wednesday - that's why it's on the Tuesday night. "It's not easy because it does have an effect on players' ability to play at the top of their game because of the closeness of the two fixtures. "But, from my point of view, in terms of cup competitions, I have always taken the view that a good cup run can help your league form anyway. "If we can progress in the competition, the opportunity to progress further will help our confidence and the fact that we are winning games, maybe, in cup competitions will help us in the league. "I have always felt in the past that it's helped people. www.teamtalk.com/queens-park-rangers/7436335/Hughes-No-major-overhaul?

Helps stabilise the team perhaps, so they dont fear wholesale dislocation of their services.

It's unlikely that what we have could keep us up so it's up to the board to show how badly they want to stay in this division. Losing Faurlin is a massive blow, most influential midfielder we had, leading that stats in tackles, passes etc. Barton will be back but been less than convincing with Traore and Taarabt to return in a few weeks by which time we could be set adrift. Not that going down bothers me with the obvious exception of what the board do as a reaction and their plans for training ground, academy etc. We'll get nowhere without those changes anyway.

Oh well I did see this coming, sounds like we won't be buying like we were promised. Change of heart by the board, or does Hughes actually beleive we have enough to stay up?! I suspect if the board had changed their mind about spending Hughes would have walked. Either way, Championship here we come! It's so frustrating because we could have got out of this still, but after the wigan game I think it'll be game over for us.

If he comes out saying "oh yes, we need loads of new players in" then not only does it completely destroy the whole squads confidence but it means other teams know we are desperate and will drive the price up for new players. You're letting anything fuel your impatience.

You're letting anything fuel your impatience. Funny thing is first thing hughes talked about when he joined is the transfer budget and needing signings so I don't think its that at all mate...fernandes has been talking about it non stop too until recently...let's be honest we are desperate for players but if were going to sign them, we would have by now...how many times did both Hughes and fernandes say we were definitely going to sign players BEFORE the Newcastle game even?!! I think your argument falls flat. something else seems to be going on. Just hope they know what theyre doing!!! Time will tell, but we don't have any time left for trial and error!

Never say die JJ!!! I don't recall anyone saying we would have new players in the squad for Newcastles match for sure. Even before Warnock was sacked he was hoping to get get two or three.....I agree with Rory....Hughes has to keep the current squads spirit high & lift them!!!..........If he said he'll be getting loads of players in then that would just kill them. I think we will have three or four signings...........Maybe five with a loan player or two before the window closes.

You're right elmer I don't give up hope officially until the close of the window. I'm pretty sure they both said that about Newcastle, and think we'll struggle if we have no-one in by wigan too, so fingers crossed...must..be...patient...

IF we don't bring in four or five class players (and if it were a Defoe-type loan for the rest of the season, that would count), I think we'll conclude that Fernandes et al were talking BS. We knew before all the talk that it was harder and more costly to buy players in January than in the Summer. Nothing has changed - except maybe their financial situation or their belief we can stay up whatever we do.
I however have to hope (and still believe) that we actually are going to splurge heavily.
But IF we don't, then let's not suddenly say, "oh well this is difficult, etc"
They fired Warnock for one reason only: To stay up. So stay up.
OR Commit themselves to staying at QPR next season come what may - and working on the training ground and the academy and new players
Action not words is how we'll judge. Deeds not spin should be the mantra.

I see it more likely that players Hughes convinced the board that he could bring to the club, he can't get. So he says no major overhaul. But still trying behind the scenes to bring players in. This way the players he can't replace don't feel unwanted.

Sparky has always been a manager who improves gradually, not a big impact on signing only for the team to fade away later.
He will instill a good work ethic, bring in some class signings and haul us out of the relegation zone, you just mark my words.

Well, this team will not stay up. Perhaps his well known and well travelled coaches can teach one striker at least how to behave in front of the goal and how to get the ball into the net. Oh, one more thing our central defenders seem overwhelmed and underskilled. Sparky, get someone here, if no dosh to spend, get one on the cheap thats better than these two. If our second goalkeeper ever recovers from what seems like the Plague, give him a shot
