Esso ran a competition for the 1974 World Cup Finals in West Germany and the idea was that you had to name a starting XI for a team representing Great Britain. I knew I should have chosen Kevin Keegan or Kenny Dalglish, but my love of Rodney Marsh meant he got the nod from me instead. The first prize of an all expenses paid trip to the World Cup Finals eluded me, but I did win a two week adventure holiday in the Lake District as a second prize. Oh well... Esso issued a collection of 22 thin metal discs with player's pictures in colour from England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales. You could stick the discs in a special album and you got one free disc for every four gallons of petrol you bought.
