Radek Cerny: Neil Warnock admits he has surpassed all expectations this season

....Neil Warnock has paid tribute to Radek Cerny, Queens Park Rangers' third choice goalkeeper who is enjoying his moment in the spotlight.

With Paddy Kenny and Brian Murphy picking up unfortunate knocks, Cerny has shot to the front of the keeping queue at Loftus Road.

The 37-year-old has made the most of his opportunity, turning in a string of fine performances.

He has played in QPR's last three Premier League fixtures and Warnock is delighted with how the veteran Czech has slipped seamlessly back into the first team fold.

"I'm really pleased for Radek," he said.

"He is a bit like Heidar [Helguson].

Expectations
"I fought very hard last year to get both of them another contract with the previous owners, and Radek has definitely surpassed my expectations since he came into the team.

"It is difficult when you are third choice and you're not even playing in the reserves.

"I think most of them are okay aside from the long-term ones and Anton (Ferdinand)," Warnock added of his squad.

"DJ is training again today. We thought he had a little relapse the other day in the reserve game, but he has had another scan and he is happy again.

"He is just a bit sore, although I think he is planning to join in today.

"Connolly joined in for most of the game against Spurs and Fitz Hall played the first half, so they both come into the reckoning."

Manchester United travel south to West London for a lunchtime Premier League affair on Sunday with Queens Park Rangers. The Hoops are a promoted side after going top of the Championship table last season.

The last time these two met in league was in 1996 when QPR last played in England's top tier of football. 2008 was the last time these two met in any competition when United defeated QPR 1-0 in a Carling Cup clash. On Sunday, it will have been eight days since United last competed but QPR represents the first match of five during an upcoming eighteen day span -- the congested holiday fixture list will require a squad.

MANCHESTER UNITED

* Form Guide: The past weekend saw United defeat Wolverhampton Wanderers 4-1 at Old Trafford. With Manchester City's loss to Chelsea FC at Stamford Bridge on Monday, this allowed the Reds to pull within two points of the leaders, City.

United have gone six successive league games unbeaten but prior to their 4-goal outing versus Wolves, their past 7 league outings -- and 8 of their past 9 -- saw them only score a single goal in those matches. Defender Anton Ferdinand -- brother of United's Rio Ferdinand -- has a hamstring issue but it is anticipated that he will still feature. The likes of DJ Campbell, Adel Taarabt, Heidar Helguson, and Robert Hulse have all sustained knocks their availability is uncertain.



PROJECTING LINEUPS

* MUFC: For United, the numerous injuries narrows down the selection choice options for manager Sir Alex Ferguson. In goal, No. 1 David De Gea is expected as is Rio Ferdinand at center-back and Patrice Evra at left-back. Jonny Evans, Chris Smalling, and Phil Jones are all options to partner Ferdinand but the latter two are also the two most viable options at right-back.

Up front, Wayne Rooney is an automatic selection and he likely will be partnered by either Danny Welbeck or Berbatov.

* QPR: In goal, the choice is Radek Cerny if No. 1 Kenny is not deemed fit. However, Cerny has been in fine form as of late and he could feature anyway. TACTICAL KEYS

* QPR's long-balls out of the back: Whether it's Kenny or Cerny in goal, both have a tendency to send the ball long. It appears to be a conscious tactic to hoof it long for the attackers, specifically Helguson and Bothroyd. The former wins 4.4 aerial duels per match while the latter wins 3.4 per match. From here, QPR like to get their tricky attackers -- such as Wright-Phillips and Taarabt -- to run onto knockdowns.

In addition, QPR's center-backs tend to hoof the ball long often as well. There appears to be little intention to work the ball out of the back. United will need to do two things against this tactic: (1) Quite obviously, their defenders and central-midfielders will need to be prepared for the consistent aerial duels.

The likes of Ferdinand, Evans, Smalling, Jones, and Carrick will be key. (2) Also, United's attackers will need to pressure QPR's defenders and goalkeeper when they have the ball at their feet so that they can help force inaccurate longballs being played.

* QPR's pressing game: QPR typically press intently as they look to close down their opponents high up the pitch Their 14.1 tackles won per game, good for 3rd in the league, can attest to their propensity to engage their counterparts.

United's defenders and deep-lying midfielders are key because they will need to move the ball quickly and accurately in order to find relief from this pressure. Ferdinand and Carrick, who are both strong on the ball, may be the key players for United against this tactic.

Rooney's ability to drop deep to link the midfield and attack is also an important outlet for a quick transition into attack as gaps may open up in this space when QPR press.

* Close down Barton & Faurlin: Faurlin is the deeper-lying of the two but he is able to ignite attacks from the back -- his 5.6 accurate long balls and 1.6 key passes per game attests to this. By comparison, Barton is tasked with being a bit more incisive: he leads his side with 3 assists in league play, 2.2 key passes per game, and 1.9 accurate crosses per game.

Armand Traore has revealed he was worried that playing in Arsenal’s 8-2 humiliation­ at Old Trafford had cost him a move to QPR.

But the Senegal defender has revealed Neil Warnock’s man-management skills have made him ready to face Manchester United again.

Traore, 22, who joined the Hoops for £2million shortly after playing in the Gunners' disastrous trip to Manchester, said: “I thought that game had cost me my move. I was just thinking, ‘Nightmare,­ I am going to stay at Arsenal’.

“I was really happy Warnock still wanted me. I was wondering what he and the QPR fans would think of me joining them after that, but everyone has been great.

“People think all those Arsenal players were rubbish that day, but I wasn’t there in my head, as I was all set to join QPR on the Thursday.”

Loftus Road boss Warnock recalled: “I called Arsenal the next day and said, ‘ You will be paying me £2m for him after that game, won’t you?’ And I told Armand that he was lucky I still wanted him!”

Left-back Traore has rewarded Warnock’s faith and added: “I have a closer relationship­ with him than I did with Arsene Wenger. I speak a lot to him and I’m mentally ready to face United again.”

If you want to talk in-depth tactics, Neil Warnock probably isn’t the best man to seek out.

When addressing his players, the Queens Park Rangers manager doesn’t go into detail about systems or team shape, or about how to specifically handle the threats posed by different teams.

For Warnock, it’s more about working very hard, about showing your superior fitness by closing down the opposition and playing at a high tempo when you get the ball. Make it as uncomfortable as possible to see if they 'fancy it’.

You could argue, in fact, that this uncomplicated approach partly explains why Rangers haven’t fared too well away from home: not enough attention is paid to the opposition. Not enough is done to negate their strengths.

At Loftus Road, however, the situation is different. Encouraged by a noisy crowd packed into a tight ground, Warnock’s players have often been able to dictate the tempo. Their endeavour and spirit, allied to some good football, has made this corner of west London a tough place to visit.

Granted, it might not have led to many victories (the derby with Chelsea marking the only one) but it hasn’t led to many defeats either. After a 4-0 reverse to Bolton on the opening day, Rangers have since been beaten only once at home in the league this season by Manchester City, when it has to be said they played very well.
You would imagine, of course, that they will have to do likewise on Sunday to get something out of Manchester United. Anything less than maximum effort will probably leave the champions heading home with all three points.

One interesting battle comes in central midfield where Warnock has recently depended on Joey Barton and Alejandro Faurlin. This pair have formed a decent partnership because Barton tends to sit and allow the talented Faurlin to go and express himself.

The Argentine, in fact, has arguably been Rangers’ best player this season. Not quick or particularly strong, Faurlin is undoubtedly a clever footballer who does the simple things well with a savvy left foot. In addition, a shrewd football brain gets him out of tight corners.

Out on the flanks, meanwhile, Warnock doesn’t like his wide men to constantly hug the touchline, preferring them to play inside the full-backs when running forward. In theory, this allows them to combine easier with the lone striker, if that is indeed the way Warnock chooses to go.

But whatever way he chooses, this match should be worth watching.

It started with a cloud hanging over us with Rodney's broken foot and when he came back it was too late (I dont know if it would have been any different mind). Trips to away games with my father and watching Tony Hazell lay down in the centre circle at Brum, getting lost in the Stoke ground and not daring to cheer for our equaliser at 1-1 and that awful day at LR when we lost to WBA and our fans collected all the milk bottles off doorsteps on their way to where the WBA coaches were parked...

QPR have been on a pretty good run recently which included wins over Arsenal and Liverpool and going back a little further, a draw at home to ever-improving Everton. But all those matches were at home and on the road it's been a very different story. The last place they'll want to be visiting this weekend is Old Trafford.

Match Odds
What can you say about Manchester United that hasn't already been said? They looked dead and buried on that Sunday when they were hammered at home by Manchester City. The momentum had shifted in the Premier League. Or so it seemed. But here we are, in early April with the defending champions five points clear of City and trading at just 1.15 to win the league on Betfair.

As ever, they had a good Christmas period and got better as the season progressed. They carried on scoring goals but improved defensively which is a bit odd because that coincided with Nemanja Vidic's injury, who is arguably their best defender.

Last Monday's win at Blackburn was extremely important for several reasons. Firstly, because it put real daylight between them and City. Secondly, because they won a match that many that tipped them to struggle in. And thirdly because it keeps the momentum going.

Momentum that is unlikely to grind to a halt here. QPR will do their best to frustrate United and it may be that the home team will have to be patient and wait a while before they finally get the break-through. They'll also have to contain Antonio Valencia, who has been excellent in recent weeks and was the best player on the park by a country mile at Blackburn. Opta remind us Antonio Valencia has 12 assists and four goals in 16 Premier League starts this season, which is remarkable given he's missed 11 matches through injury this term.

Speaking of Opta stats, QPR have picked up just two points from the last 27 available in Premier League away matches. It's hard to see how Rangers are going to contain a rampant United and rather than taking the straightforward win at 1.2, just about the shortest price I've ever seen a team at to win a match in the Premier League, it's better to go with United to win to nil at [1.92.]

Correct Score
It's easy to imagine a scenario where the hosts go goal-crazy and rack up a cricket score. But at the highest level that doesn't happen as often as one might think and if United are thinking about goal-difference potentially coming into the title race, then so are QPR in terms of Premier League survival. So if they do go a goal or two down, Mark Hughes will be hammering it into his players that they need to keep on going and not let the scoreline get out of hand. Splitting your stakes between 2-0 and 3-0 looks the way to go.


First Goalscorer
You won't become rich overnight backing favourites but then again betting is all about steady progress. Wayne Rooney had a relatively quiet game at Blackburn the other day but in his case that tends to mean he's about to have a great game next time out. He got the only goal of the match against Fulham a couple of weeks ago and is the bet to open the scoring here.

“Rio will not be fazed by it at all. It will be an emotional day for him of course, he is an absolute legend at that place and rightly so.

“But he is still one of the best defenders in Europe.

“He is a fantastic footballer and facing Falcao will be seen as a challenge, nothing to be frightened of.

Not sure it really helps us RVP being injured as he has been pretty average this season anyway.

See Rooney and Falcao causing our defence many a problem.

Apparently Yun and Sandro now training fully so they should both be back for Stoke , looks like we will everyone back for then .

In fact touch wood hasn't been as bad as some seasons with injuries , Ale apart. Certainly Harry can't say we are down to the bones .

No I don't think so Sharky' by the time we play Stoke 31st Jan (as its FA Cup round 4 next w/e)
There will only be third place play off and final fame left .
So they might leave him out Stoke fixture or just put him on bench .
