me › Premiership News 0digg QPR skipper Barton brands Newcastle chiefs "cretins" Submitted by tribalfootball.com on Wed, 11/30/2011 - 07:21 QPR skipper Joey Barton says Chris Hughton was sacked by Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley because of player power.
He says senior members of the squad led a revolt against the billionaire's plans to impose a new bonus scheme when Newcastle were promoted back to the Premier League. When the squad refused to buckle, Hughton took the blame.
Barton told QPR podcast 'Open all R's': We were only club in Premier League history not to sign a bonus sheet. It never happened. It's unprecedented. We refused because they tried to railroad us into it.
"It fundamentally cost Chris Hughton his job as he couldn't get us to sign so Mike Ashley said he had no control over the players and that was his undoing.
"Chris knew he was on borrowed time from then - yet this was a guy who kept club together when we went down, had no budget, inherited a playing squad fragmented and disjointed and handled himself with nothing but dignity. He did a fantastic job swimming against the tide at boardroom level and got the club back into the Premier League.
"We felt aggrieved by Chris' exit, at the same time we refused to sign the bonus sheet. They decided we were the paid workforce and thought we were sports direct and do what subordinates there do.
"The bigger name players advised the players not to sign and that filtered back to the boardroom. It's no coincidence that I got sold, or given away, Carroll and Nolan were sold and Harper is being forced to go on loan and his position is made untenable and Alan Smith has been told to train with the reserves for the rest of his days.
"It's all about power and control. They are running the club and it's going well for them, but that's more to the testament to the players, fans and the manager. I just wouldn't like to work for those two cretins.

i think london is referring to the word cretin, which is a medical term, that barton has labelled mike ashly and partner as having.

My posts can be challenging but have to be read thoroly Mr. Rory. To be fair, the post isn't challenging, but the title is highly inflammatory. Whilst both medical terms, they have are on different spectrums in terms of acceptable non-medial usage. If Joey Barton had used the 'r' word then there would have been no defence for him, but I don't think cretin is as offensive in the same vein, is it?

To be fair I didn't actually know what the term 'cretin' actually means as well, it isn't exactly a word the youth of today uses.

BTW, Ashley was extremely unpopular with the fans for years so Joey is hardly on his own here. Chris Hughton's sacking was seen by a lot of people as an act of disloyalty, not just by Newcastle, but neutrals as well, it would be like us sacking Warnock after last season. And replacing him with Curbishley.

Is there a possibility that joey will get in trouble with the FA for his comments ? I don't see why, a lot of players criticise former employers, Jaap Stam did while he was playing, he did not criticize the FA or referees.

Whether I agree or not with some of the things JB says, he is talking far too much and ought to zip his mouth, keep his head down, and do what in effect QPR pay him to do: namely keep us in the Premiership. Some of his loose cannon remarks could have an adverse affect on the team and our survival chances. One of his problems is that he erroneously believes he has more intelligence than he really does. Its' like that old saying about: "Better to keep your mouth closed and be thought a fool than to open it and remove all doubt".

I have no problems with my post, highly inflammatory Fraser , ? for who to who, baffling comment.Firstly Barton goes way out of his field to make a wild comment about the selfishness of suicide. Even if he thinks so, and many lay people have that opinion but again this is a medical condition. Commenting on about any topic he has an opinion about, especially such a sensitive time when the family is in a state of unbelievable shock, griel, disbelief, that is inflammatory and those continunances will without DOUBT get him into trouble, and if it doesnt someone isnt doing their job. If someone died of Kidney failure because he could no longer abide more dialysis or minimal quality of life, could he, would, he say This individual is selfish to his family" No!. Buried in his comment is the continued prejudice against any semblance of mental disease even where this individuals mind is no different in its failure as was the kidney disease individual.
His calling Newcastle owners Cretins is highly inflammatory. Im surprised people with an education havent heard of this nor know its meaning. Originally it was used for a term superceded by Mongoloid. Both terms are degrading and are seen as a slur a demeaning and a dimunition of the humanity of these individiuals. Certain Murderous Dictators have put all mentally challenged individuals into camps for being murdered as a stress on the state.
cretin [ˈkrɛtɪn] n 1. (Medicine / Pathology) a person afflicted with cretinism: a mentally retarded dwarf with wide-set eyes, a broad flat nose, and protruding tongue 2. a person considered to be extremely stupid [from French crétin, from Swiss French crestin, from Latin Chrīstiānus Christian, alluding to the humanity of such people, despite their handicaps] cretinoid adj cretinous adj Collins English Dictionary – Complete and Unabridged © HarperCollins Publishers 1991, 1994, 1998, 2000, 2003
Now I just re read the title. Alright there is an ironic quality which seems to have been off putting and thats as far as I will accept as upset, I will add something and make a slight repair. I think my major cocern tho is with Barton who has to stop these idle comments which can seriously hurt his career and QPRs future imo.

cheers for the title change, London. I just felt it was a little inflammatory (that may not be the right word, perhaps hyperbolic?) considering the actual word used and the differing social acceptances of the two respective words - medical usage aside.
As for the content, it is a little churlish, in my opinion, to complain about Joey in this particular instance as he was responding honestly to a question put to him in a QPR podcast. If this was a twitter rant completely out of the blue, then I may find it a little bit more disagreeable. Sure, he didn't have to go so far as to name-calling, but I personally find my mouth running before my brain has switched on; writing a tweet and contemplating its consequences before hitting send is so much easier (not that I am sure he does that much either).

I think we all (or most of us) agree: I wish he'd just SHUT UP.. He's not doing QPR any good. To the degree that fans of other clubs have an opinion about QPR, this will make them more negative. Ditto football authorities. TELEGRAPH/Luke Edwards
Joey Barton challenges Newcastle chairman Derek Llambias to take a lie detector test
Joey Barton has responded to the threat of legal action by Newcastle United chairman Derek Llambias by challenging him to take a lie detector test live on television. In another ugly spat between the bitter midfielder and his former employers, Llambias finally responded to Barton’s constant goading in interviews and on Twitter with a statement that rubbished claims he was sold because of a row over bonuses and that none of Newcastle United’s success this season was down to the board. Barton was also criticised for making insensitive comments about staff who work at Newcastle owner Mike Ashley’s Sports Direct chain. He also accused Ashley and Llambias of breaking promises to him and other players and lying to fans. Clearly annoyed by Barton’s refusal to move on from his acrimonious departure, Llambias said: “In a week when one of Newcastle United’s most beloved footballers passed away, it is disappointing that once again Joey Barton makes the headlines. “It is also unfortunate that Joey chose to draw such a disparaging comparison between himself and the employees of Sports Direct, who through hard work and dedication are the recipients of one of the most generous bonus schemes in UK retailing. “It may not be a lot of money to Joey, but over 2,000 Sports Direct employees earning £20,000 will receive shares worth over £44,000 over the next two years. “However, in this week of all weeks, we really do not wish to engage in a public war of words with Joey Barton. “ Our legal advisors are dealing with the matter now and we would encourage Joey to concentrate on his football at Queens Park Rangers.” Barton has previously been able to attack without fear of public riposte as neither Ashley or Llambias are willing to give interviews and reacted in typically volatile fashion when he realised they had issued the statement. The QPR captain’s anger may well land him in hot water with his new club given the guidelines issued to players about the way the use the social networking site. Barton said: “Seen Llambas comments, he is crass and has no class. I’ll leave it for another day but if he wants to take a polygraph live on tv, lets do it. “Not only do I have insurmountable amounts of proof (texts etc) but also about 6 others players who will concur. Am ready when u r Derek… “If he’s worried now, him and his fat mate should be sh*tting it if I decide to write a book. There’ll be no holding back on those 2 muppets.” Although claiming to be happy with his move to QPR, Barton is still upset about having to leave Newcastle in the summer after the club refused to re-open negotiations on a new contract. In an earlier interview Barton said: “It’s all about power and control. They are running the football club and it’s going really well for them at the minute but that’s more a testament to the players and the fans, and also the manager (Alan Pardew). The manager has been different class. He continued: “At Newcastle I couldn’t take to the pitch and lie to the fans and be a part of it. You are doing it for yourself, the fans and the football club but if you fundamentally despise everything that the owners stand for it is very difficult. "I am a man of principles, I am a very principled individual and for me taking money off fans and taking the p*** out of them is not what I am about.” www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/teams/newcastle-united/8926885/Joey-Barton-challenges-Newcastle-chairman-Derek-Llambias-to-take-a-lie-detector-test.html

Well fraser, I still think a public personality has to have some selective managing function over his impulsive comments.
even if it is questions asked. So I will have no problem with your "churlish" description. Except to diagree, but without any rancour. An interestin, I think, post of the football mental health clinic as it concerns footballers is posted above. I found it superb, others may have no interest, Tony Adams was the founder of this organisation I believe.

I haven't checked out the thread you mention but will do. Also, if it's the one that I think it is, didn't Joey go there to sort himself out?
Other than that we'll have to agree to disagree :-)

ALAN PARDEW wishes Joey Barton would just shut up.
Former Toon ace Barton has branded owner Mike Ashley and chairman Derek Llambias 'cretins'.
Ashley, who was also dubbed the Ayatollah by Barton, is considering legal action yet the QPR midfielder has continued to hit out at the St James' Park chief on Twitter.
But Newcastle manager Alan Pardew, whose side hosts Chelsea tomorrow, has had enough.
He said: "I keep asking myself why does he keep popping up. On his Twitter account? That might be the answer.
"From my point of view, the only focus as a manager of this club is the team and it is a team that is doing exceptionally well.
"Unfortunately, Joey's comments take away the positive nature of what we are doing here in terms of the players' performances.
"They have been absolutely brilliant and I'm not particularly keen on anyone taking the limelight away from them.
"It is a bit frustrating but you have to put it into the perspective of the week we are having. It means nothing really.
"Why is he doing it? I don't know who is gaining out of it and I don't know what Joey is getting out of it."

The Suns Steve Howards view.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now shut it, Joey
YOU do wish Joey Barton would sometimes put a sock in it.
If only for his own good.
The controversial midfielder's latest outburst, in which he called Newcastle owner Mike Ashley a "cretin", revolved around his claim the club tried to once cut his wages.
And where was Barton at the time?
In prison for one of a string of violent offences that have blighted his life (and other's).
Many will judge him extremely fortunate to still have been employed.
Barton now accuses Newcastle of trying to "f***" him when he was going through a "low time". And that, "as a man of principle", they could indeed go and "f***" themselves.
The QPR skipper would seem to suffer from an irony bypass.
He no longer drinks, since alcoholic malfunction compounded an anger problem.
But the tone of his latest onslaught on people he deems to have crossed him, suggests the anger is still there.

Anything the Sun says almost immediately puts me in the opposite camp, and I know that my views on the matter go against most people's on this message board too. Having said that, JB did mention that Newcastle illegally (something not mentioned in the Sun's opinion) tried to cut his wages to a fifth of what they were when he was in prison. Sounds to me like they weren't doing him a favour by keeping him employed, but tried to exploit the situation. Anyway, not sure what is more tiresome, JB's tweets, or everyone else telling him to shut up

He's never going to shut up whether its tweeting or on podcasts or in columns for Big Issue. Its his nature and you wont change him by posting on here. I think he talks sense and I took the 'selfish' quote in the context I think he meant.Others have / will disagree but thats what forums / twitter or whatever is all about..opinions.. If he starts slagging off QPR ,Warnock fellow squad players I will join all you twitter haters but for now it doesnt bother me in the slightest..
