Warbo's word: Italian coaches are like Mary Poppins

CLAUDIO RANIERI got asked once what it was like to have the threat of being fired as Chelsea manager hovering over his head like a sword.
He laughed at the so-called 'pressure', and then reminded the English media in front of him that all Italian coaches are like Mary Poppins - minus the character's parachute of an umbrella.
They come and they go in Italy.
So it's hardly a surprise this week that QPR are considering asking another to wait for the white smoke from chairman Flavio Briatore in his relentless pursuit of success.
The next 'right man' looks as if it will be Darren Ferguson provided Sir Alex's lad can be prised away from Peterborough, and he will need to hit the ground running faster than Usain Bolt. There can hardly be a person left who believes Briatore is willing to watch his 'project' grow while 'building' for success to come gradually (the quote marks are attributed to him by the way). Yesterday is clearly too late for a man used to the fast lane as a Formula One boss.
In essence, the brief for anyone else who fancies the job, which has seen Luigi Di Canio, Iain Dowie, Gareth Ainsworth and Paulo Sousa all steer into the parking space under the word 'manager' at the training ground over the last 12 months - is this.
You don't get a pile of cash for transfer fees, but you can offer biggish wages.
Informed sources say that Dexter Blackstock went from £9,000-a-week at Rangers to £12,000 on loan at
Nottingham Forest last week. But his £9k with Rs was £5k up on what he was getting at Southampton three years ago. But you will need to get results from the off.
Basically, six out of seven wins will see you through until December - and from then on results will have to be something of much the same - even though, like Sousa, you have a huge picture of the chairman pinned to your office wall.

QPR line up bid for Robins hotshot
Apr 9 2009 London Informer
SIMON COX is being lined up for a £1.5m switch to QPR, writes Paul Warburton.
The Swindon striker has caught the attention of Rangers after a scintillating season in which the 21-year-old has found the back of the net 27 times in 45 appearances. And what is particularly impressive, is that he's done it for a struggling side. The Robins are languishing in 18th place - only three points outside the drop zone.
And it would help a Rangers bid if cash-strapped Swindon eventually end up in the League's basement.
There was some thought at Loftus Road that another League One hotshot, Gary Hooper, might fit the bill as Rangers look to replace Dexter Blackstock - on his way to Nottingham Forest in a £2m permanent deal in the summer.
But, although Hooper has only needed to look at a ball for it to fly in for another Sc**thorpe goal this season, Rs bosses are mindful of his no-show on the scorers chart when he was at Southend last season.
An Rs source said: "If Sc**thorpe also get promoted, they're likely to be in the same league as QPR - which might make it harder to get him. That, and Cox looks a better bet anyway." [25cf] The FA Disciplinary Committee demanded a DVD of the incident that saw Paulo Sousa sent to the stands just before half-time in QPR's goalless draw with Crystal Palace on Saturday.
The Rs' Portuguese boss sat among his injured players in the second half after he took exception to the treatment meted out to striker Sammy Di Carmine.
An Rs spokesman said: "It's not unusual for the FA to want a DVD to go with the referee's report to help make up their minds over what to do next."
