Ron Hunt's one and Only Goal for QPR
51 Years ago, November 14, 1970: QPR Center Half, Ron Hunt, one of QPR's Heroes in their League Cup Win, scored his one and only goal for QPR (in some 250 games), in QPR's 1-1 draw at Sheffield United. (A QPR team, managed at the time by Les Allen, which contained Mike Kelly and Barry Bridges and Terry Venables, Martyn Busby, Rodney Marsh and so on). And a Sheffield United team, with Tony Currie. -
- re Ron Hunt - QPR's (small) Center Half/Center Back Born December 19, 1945. Hunt made his debut in December 1964 and played some 200+ games for QPR until 1972-3 when he forced to retire with a knee injury at 29. But of all his games, he is perhaps most famous for his role in QPR's third and winning goal in the 1967 League Cup Final when he collided with the WBA Goalie. (or as described in Wikipedia "In a fairy tale 2nd half, the underdogs stormed back.... In the closing minutes QPR centre half Ron Hunt went on a forward run and as he challenged the keeper for the ball it ran loose to Mark Lazarus to score the winning goal. -

My old hero, Ron. A player who spent much of the 1966-67 season standing on the half way line, tapping his toe. He seemed to have an inhibition about even crossing it. Then, when we're at Wembley, with time getting on, and with defending still required, he decides to charge through the entire West Brom team, just continuing his run even when he was momentarily not in possession.
He certainly 'collided' with West Brom's second choice keeper, but that sort of fifty-fifty challenge was frequently allowed then, the logic being, I suppose, that it was six of one and half a dozen of the other. Keepers were vulnerable to the outstretched boot of an onrushing attacker, but the attacker's leg was arguably even more vulnerable to a giant keeper of the Jennings/Parkes/Shilton/Corrigan type hurling his entire body at it, as they did then.
Unfortunately, poor Shepherd wasn't a giant (nor Peter Springett), and Ron put him out for the count.
Directly behind the goal, at ground level (right beside the tunnel, in fact) I'll never forget glancing round at my mates disappointed as the keeper appeared to smother the chance, only to turn back and see the ball lying in front of an open goal with the biggest grin in football on Mark Lazarus's face scuttling towards it.
Ron Hunt said he got the bollocking of his life from Keith Sanderson for his moment of 'madness'. 'Never, ever, do anything like that again' was the gist of it. Teach him to win us our only major trophy.
Tough on West Brom, that, but having dominated the first half, they'd lost their composure in the usual last half hour of mayhem the Rs of the day typically produced.
Remember their entire defence, almost panicking as they backed off Rodney as he advanced for the second goal.
Not to mention the distracted ball-watching for Morgan's (also typical) sneak header.
They say 2-0 is the trickiest lead to manage. Feels very comfortable, but it isn't enough to sit on.
But it was a special team. A classic of its kind. A core of home grown youngsters leavened with a careful sprinkling of experience, diligence, and gloriously extravagant footballing skills.
Unforgettable!

With regards to Stainrod, something unusual happened to him and the rest of the team on his debut?
I expect Bushman to get this in a nano second but anyone else know this bit of QPR trivia?

For those of you out there that like stupid trivia
Staintod's first game for QPR was away at Preston North End. On the morning of the game, the kit man discovered that he had forgotten to pack the first team kit. There was not enough time for a kit to arrive from London.
So Preston played in their home kit.
We played in Preston's away kit.
I'm sure it must have happened beforeā¦... but as I went to the game it's something that has stuck in the memory banks!
