Warnock backs stadium move QPR boss confident of increasing fanbase
Queens Park Rangers manager Neil Warnock believes that the club has enough fans to make the move to a new stadium a success.
QPR's Malaysian owner, Tony Fernandes, has said that he plans to have his team play in a new stadium that will have a bigger capacity than their current 20,000-seater home, Loftus Road.
However, there have been doubts whether the London side would be able to fill their prospective new ground with enough supporters, but Warnock is positive that they will be able to do so.
"I think we would be able to fill a bigger stadium," he said. "When I was at Huddersfield, we got something like 4,000 average at the old Leeds Road and then we moved to the McAlpine, a fantastic new complex at that time, and we had 12,500 from day one so it trebled."
Tony's not daft QPR welcome Chelsea to Loftus Road in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon, with the home side currently 14th in the table with nine points from eight matches.
Warnock is relishing the London derby but tempers suggestions that Fernandes should invest in QPR like Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich has done at Chelsea.
"The only thing is that Loftus Road for games like we have tomorrow against Chelsea, it's a fantastic place to be stood on the bench and it's a great atmosphere - I would miss that personally," he explained.
"Roman is a little bit different to most people. Financially he dwarfs everything.
"Tony is not daft. He hasn't got where he has today without knowing what he's doing.
"I think he wants to do well, without necessarily spending billions. He'd like to do it an organised way and get the facilities and the staff in to take the club forward and obviously if you can get stability in the Premier League it doesn't take many years to fund itself."
Buzz "You know what you're going to get with Chelsea and you just have to hope they have an off day," added the 62-year-old.
"They're such a good team. We just have to get the atmosphere and enjoy it, give them a good game if we can.
"Playing against top teams, getting points is a bonus. I can sense on the training ground they are up for it, though.
"There's that sense of buzz because it's Chelsea and the first derby we've had for many years. Some of the kids

NW's not really comparing like with like when he cites Huddersfield's move to the McAlpine. The costs involved in supporters just getting to the stadium are higher for London clubs' fans. Many R's fans appear to travel in from a wide area (Bucks, Berks, Northants etc). Hudd's fans are generally more local to their town than R's fans are to W12. It costs me (if I'm lucky and can internet book early) at least 18quid in rail fares just to get to LR from Northampton. For this reason I can't afford to attend as many home games as I would wish. It's cheaper for me to attend away games.

For all we know we could have a very large group of fans (10,000-15,000) who don't go to Loftus Road because they are really really really tall and don't get enough leg room Maybe if we move they will start going.

By saying " i would miss it (LR)" Warnock suggests he would still be our gaffer when we got the new stadium = in three years.

The stadium itself would probably take about 2 years to build and Tony has said we will wait a year or two to see how the club is doing and what league we are in.

"It doesn't take many years to fund itself".
Really? Why are so many Clubs losing money then? Are Chelsea funding themselves? No. Man City? No. Fulham, with losses of £164 million just keeping their heads above the relegation zone, and not even the expense of a new ground? No. Were Reading? No. They were still heavily in debt last time I looked, and not setting football alight either.
The Clubs may be responsible for the losses run up by the likes of 'Tony', but that isn't the same thing as funding themselves. It is merely funding the 'investors'. When they sell out, the proceeds of their shares go into their pockets.
The debt remains behind at the Club. Villa are in debt, Newcastle are, Everton are.
So many Clubs with new and bigger grounds are in the lower leagues. Why? All of them have self-styled 'successful businessmen' in control. Few of them have successful FOOTBALL people in control.
Do Clubs need to get themselves into debt? By and large they can't help their lack of success, or their lack of talent. The game is DESIGNED that way. Clubs are INTENDED to fail. Otherwise, everyone would win the Title, there would be no losers and no point.
Why are Chelsea so perennially unable to turn big talk and vast losses into the domination of the League that their vast expenditure should give them? The 'special one' knew how to do it, but Abramovich clearly doesn't.
And at Clubs like QPR, once the talk is of how much better we'll do if only our 'benefactors' can sell off the Club's only asset, you know they haven't a clue. It doesn't take footballing talent to build a stadium, and building it won't provide the Club with that talent.
Beating Chelsea was a great result. They have bigger attendances - and a bigger Ground, and they've spent vast sums on players.
But football being what it is, Man City are top. And Ferguson has a dozen or so titles.
Can't think of a Club that ever changed its size. Not since the beginning of the League. Wimbledon FC remained small - as we did - even in the top flight. Wigan maybe. I wouldn't count MK Dons because they plundered what another Club had achieved.
