Football League - WINNERS ANNOUNCED
Sheffield United manager Kevin Blackwell was celebrating today after being named Coca-Cola Championship Manager of the Month for March.
Blackwell's side enjoyed an impressive month, winning four of their six league fixtures and remaining unbeaten throughout March. They began the month with back to back victories against Birmingham City and Coventry City before picking up two creditable draws from their matches against Queens Park Rangers and Blackpool. They continued their fine run with wins over Derby County and Cardiff City to end an impressive month which saw the Blades move into the Play-Off places in the Coca-Cola Championship as they head into April.
Also short-listed for the March award were Owen Coyle of Burnley, Bryan Gunn of Norwich City and Wolverhampton Wanderers' Mick McCarthy.
Chris Kamara, Chairman of the Coca-Cola Manager of the Month Awards panel, said: "Sheffield United had the hardest fixtures out of any team in the Coca-Cola Championship and came through with flying colours. They beat two of their fellow promotion contenders, Birmingham City and Cardiff City and in doing so have put themselves in contention not only for the Play-Offs, but also for automatic promotion if they continue this sort of form."
Peterborough United boss Darren Ferguson took the Coca-Cola League 1 award after an impressive month.
Ferguson's men hit top form in March, winning all six of their league fixtures. Their month began with back to back victories away at Leyton Orient and Hartlepool United before netting three points at home to Sc**thorpe United and Northampton Town respectively. Their excellent run continued with three points at Bristol Rovers before ending the month with an impressive victory against title rivals Leicester City, which leaves the Posh challenging for top spot in Coca-Cola League 1 as they head into April.
Also short-listed for the March award were Simon Grayson of Leeds United, Kenny Jackett of Millwall and Southend United's Steve Tilson.
Chris Kamara, Chairman of the Coca-Cola Manager of the Month Awards panel, said: "Darren Ferguson's team had an outstanding month. They had tricky fixtures including the leaders Leicester but overcame everything put in front of them. Ferguson is a young manager but gets better and better as the months go on, and they've now given themselves a great chance of playing in the Coca-Cola Championship next season."
Chesterfield manager Lee Richardson was also celebrating after being named Coca-Cola League 2 Manager of the Month for March.
Richardson's men enjoyed a busy, but hugely successful, March picking up five wins and three draws from their nine league fixtures. They began the month with a victory at title challengers Bury before grabbing a share of the spoils away at Wycombe Wanderers.
Their impressive run continued with highlights including victories against Grimsby Town, Rochdale, Port Vale and a remarkable three points away at league leaders Brentford. Draws against Dagenham & Redbridge and Aldershot Town added to a fantastic points return, which leaves the Spireites challenging for the Coca-Cola League 2 Play-Off places as they head into April.
Also short-listed for the March award were John Coleman of Accrington Stanley, Eddie Howe of Bournemouth and Rotherham United's Mark Robins.
Chris Kamara, chairman of the Coca-Cola Manager of the Month Awards panel, said: "18 points from nine games in the month was a great haul for Lee Richardson's team. They've got a small squad, but have gone on a good run and have now got an outside chance of getting into the Play Offs."
