And match report Goal.com Morocco Defeat Angola In Portugal Friendly A new look Atlas Lions team bounced back from their World Cup qualifying defeat with a 2-0 win over the Palancas Negras in Lisbon. Four days after their surprising 2-1 home loss to Gabon, the Moroccan national team responded with a 2-0 win over Angola on Tuesday. Following a public outcry over his tactical decisions, Roger Lemerre responded by selecting a changed line-up for the friendly encounter. The alterations paid dividends as soon as the ninth minute, when Adel Taarabt, who was partaking in his first game as a starter, opened his Atlas Lions goal account by capitalising on a botched clearance by the Angolan ‘keeper.
The Queens Park Rangers player had no trouble putting the ball past the out of place stopper with a lofted strike from 45-yards out.The score stayed in favour of the North Africans until the end of the period. Taarabt was again at the centre of his team’s next goal when he and Mbark Boussoufa combined to find an open Marouane Chamakh, who simply had to push the ball into the net to consolidate the lead in the 50th minute. Merouane Zemmama and Mehdi Benatia made it into the match for Morocco and held their own. Meanwhile, Youssouf Hadji and Nabil Dirar, who were both unimpressive in Morocco’s home defeat to Gabon, came on as substitutes. One player who was particularly impressive for the Moroccans was Feyenoord’s Karim El Ahmadi, who showed that he could possibly replace veteran Youssef Safri in upcoming outings. The match also allowed Roger Lemerre to test the only player plying his trade in the Moroccan league, Karim Fegrouch. The Wydad Casablanca goalkeeper filled in ably for Aalborg’s Karim Zaza. The win is a good sign for a team in need of a morale boost after their World Cup dreams took a heavy blow on Saturday in Casablanca. Moroccans will hope that their team can travel to Yaounde in June and reproduce the same result against Cameroon when group qualifying play continues. Meanwhile, this is the Angolan side’s third friendly loss in a row. The slump has seen them fall 4-0 to Mali on February 11 and 1-0 against Cape Verdes six days ago. This latest result adds to the misery of a side that is already out of the running for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa but is preparing to host the African Nations Cup earlier that year.
