The Shots travelled to Harlington to take part in the days top versus bottom clash, at the windswept former Chelsea training ground. Kits aside, observers would have been hard pushed to work out who was who, as the visitors dominated early play against a strong wind.
Cox and Smith won their midfield battles, Connolly and Pearson linked well with Castle on the right, against a multi-national Rs side. The game's first real chance fell to Castle who cut in from the right flank, but elected to cross the ball to Mekki rather than shoot. However on 10 minutes, a Connolly pass put Castle through with Rs keeper Bulmer and the former Bournemouth winger drilled the ball into the bottom left corner, to give the underdogs a 1-0 lead. As happened many times this season, the Shots should have added to the scoreline through Pearson and Mekki, before the hosts levelled on 20 minutes through Molloey from just inside the penalty area. On 28 minutes the Rs took the lead from the penalty spot through Parker, after Nimmo was adjudged to have up-ended Vauterpool.
The second half gave the Shots wind advantage, although the Rs denied space quickly. In defence Siemak and Breimyr both produced solid performances, and the Shots central pair of Nimmo and Hutchings repelled most passes from deep, as the hosts bypassed midfield in their attack focussed 4-2-4 system. However, one long ball found Parker, whose trickery got him past Nimmo only to be tripped by the defender on the edge of the area. Eumer's free kick beat the four-man wall with ease to leave Peglar stranded.
At 3-1 down the visitors dug in, and on 56 minutes Connolly, battling as always, cleverly beat left back Waters from the right hand corner flag, and rifled a cross goalwards. Onrushing Mekki beat his marker, to hit a side volley from 10 yards, and set up a nail-biting finale. Shots added fresh legs with Pilgrim, Landais and Campbell replacing Castle, Breimyr and Mekki, but were unable to breakdown the Rs resolute defence.
Definitely a good performance from the Shots against a very professional and well resourced QPR side, who not only lead the PYAL SE Conference, but also play in the National PYAL Cup Final against Grimsby Town in mid-April.
Only three PYAL games remain - Barnet (H) 14th April, Brighton (H) 21st April and Wycombe at Bisham Abbey (1100 KO), the same day the 1st Xl play at Adams Park (Sat.18th April).
