El-Hadji Diouf leaves Blackburn Rovers in the dark over his whereabouts after pre-season no-show
Blackburn Rovers are attempting to contact Senegalese forward El-Hadji Diouf following his failure to report back for pre-season training at Ewood Park.
Diouf, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Scottish champions Rangers, was absent as Steve Kean’s squad flew to Austria last week for a seven-day training camp.
And the former Liverpool, Bolton and Sunderland player has now left club officials bewildered by failing to turn up at Blackburn's Brockhall training ground on Tuesday following the squad’s return from Austria.
The club have been attempting to contact Diouf to ascertain his whereabouts, but the 30 year-old continued to be absent on Wednesday, with a club source claiming: ‘We can’t find him. Nobody knows where he is.”
Diouf’s disappearing act is the latest episode in the controversial forward’s career in English football.
In 2004, he was embroiled in spitting incidents with a Middlesbrough supporter and the Portsmouth defender Arjan de Zeeuw. In September 2009, Diouf was investigated by Merseyside Police for allegedly making a racist comment to white ball-boy during Blackburn’s defeat at Everton.
Diouf’s loan to Rangers in January came in the wake of the player’s row with Queens Park Rangers manager Neil Warnock, who described Diouf as a ‘sewer rat’ amid claims that he verbally abused QPR’s Jamie Mackie while the defender lay on the ground with a broken leg during an FA Cup third-round tie.
Blackburn manager Kean has already made it clear to Diouf that he does not figure in his plans at Ewood Park, but the club has yet to receive firm interest in the player.
Rangers manager Ally McCoist has ruled out a permanent move, but Sam Allardyce is understood to be keen to sign Diouf for a third time, having taken him to Bolton and Blackburn, in order to boost West Ham’s Championship promotion bid.
