Supposedly News of The World Hoops eye Cannavaro June 26, 2011 QPR are lining up a sensational move for Italian World Cup-winning captain Fabio Cannavaro. Defender Cannavaro, 37, is available on a free after being released by Dubai side Al-Ahli. Hoops owner Flavio Briatore, who wants to land a big name to mark the club's return to the Premier League, would love to bring the former Juventus and Real Madrid star and fellow countryman to Loftus Road. Cannavaro - who rejected a coaching role at Al Ahli to continue his playing career - said: "I have not yet decided when I will retire." Centre-back Cannavaro is the most capped player in Italy's history and led the nation to victory over France in the 2006 World Cup Final. www.newsoftheworld.co.uk/notw/nol_sport/nol_football/clubs/nolclubs_qpr/1333531/Hoops-eye-Italy-veteran-Fabio-Cannavaro.html

or Hargreaves STARNEIL WARNOCK'S OWEN HARGREAVES CHANCE ABOVE: Neil Warnock is considering giving Owen Hargreaves a chance Neil Warnock is considering giving Owen Hargreaves a chance to save his career 26th June 2011 By Carl EldridgeYour Shout ( 0 ) NEIL WARNOCK is considering giving Owen Hargreaves a chance to save his career at QPR. Owen Hargreaves was released by Manchester United at the end of last season and is now a free agent. Hargreaves, 30, has been sidelined for two years with injuries, most of which stem from having tendonitis in both knees. But Warnock could do with the former Bayern Munich star’s Premier League experience as the Hoops look to improve their squad in order to stay in the top flight for more than one season. Ex-Sheffield United and Crystal Palace boss Warno could make a move – if the midfielder will entertain a pay-as-you-play deal. But he will have to hurry, MLS sides Toronto and Vancouver also want to offer Hargreaves a deal. www.dailystar.co.uk/football/view/197939/Neil-Warnock-s-Owen-Hargreaves-chance/

The "good" news is that the man who brought Dean Sturridge to QPR, without giving him a medical, is no longer involved with QPR transfers...Oh wait a minute...!

His wikipedia profile - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fabio_CannavaroObviously Wikipedia is not exactly THE Source but if accurate: Couldn't make it in the UAE, but expect him to make it in the Premiership? ..."Al-Ahli Dubai - On 2 June 2010, it was announced that Cannavaro would move to UAE Football League side Al-Ahli Dubai on a free transfer after the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Cannavaro signed a two-year deal.[7] He made 16 appearances for the Dubai club, with 2 goals. On 21 June 2011, Al-Ahli announced that it had terminated his contract although he still had another year remaining. The UAE club reasoned his performance fell short of their expectations"

Cannavaro open to offers Veteran Italian defender planning to play on Last Updated: June 26, 2011 9:56am
Fabio Cannavaro has no plans to slip into retirement just yet and is being linked with a move to England.
The 37-year-old defender is available on a free transfer after being released by Dubai-based outfit Al-Ahli.
It had been suggested that he was ready to hang up his boots and turn his hand to coaching, following a glittering career at the top.
The World Cup winner believes he can continue competing at the highest level, though, and is preparing to return to Europe.
Possible destination Reports suggest the former Juventus and Real Madrid centre-half could be lured to England.
Premier League new boys Queens Park Rangers have been touted as one possible destination, and Cannavaro has yet to distance himself from the speculation.
He is yet to announce what his intentions are for this summer, but he has made it clear that he will not be slipping out of the spotlight.
"I have not yet decided when I will retire," he said when pressed on his future.

The UAE's The National Al Ahli deny Fabio Cannavaro has been released Ahmed Rizvi Jun 26, 2011 Al Ahli have denied reports that Fabio Cannavaro, the 2006 World Cup-winning Italian captain, has left the club. Jeff Topping / The National DUBAI // Al Ahli have denied reports claiming Fabio Cannavaro has been released by the club and could be headed for England. The British Sunday tabloid News of the World has linked Cannavaro with a move to promoted side Queens Park Rangers in the English Premier League, claiming the Italian was released by Al Ahli on June 21. But Ahmed Khalifa Hammad, the chief executive of Al Ahli, insists the 2006 World Cup-winning captain is still a part of the club. "He has not been released, nothing of this kind has happened," Khalifa said. "He is on holiday and we will discuss once he comes back. Everyday I am hearing new stories and I don't know from where these people get their information." Speculations, however, continue over Cannavaro's future in the Pro League after Al Ahli announced their second signing for the new season. Khalifa has just returned from England, where he agreed a three-year deal for Jakson Avelino Coelho "Jaja", the 25-year-old Brazilian striker. Last week, the club announced a two-year deal for Grafite, another Brazilian striker, who moves from Germany side Wolfsburg. Despite Khalifa's denials, Cannavaro's future is far from certain. Under league rules, Pro League clubs can only have four foreign players on their roster, one whom has to be Asian. The two new arrivals mean Ahli will have to release either Cannavaro, who still has a year on his contract, or their top-scorer from last season Pinga, to comply with the rules. "We are looking for one more player now and he has to be Asian," confirmed Khalifa. Al Shabab, meanwhile, are reportedly close to signing Azizbek Haydarov, the Uzbekistan international defensive midfielder, as their Asian player for the new season. Haydarov, 25, currently plies his trade with Bunyodkor, Uzbek champions for the past three seasons. The club have retained their three foreign players from the last season: Carlos Villanueva, Julio Cesar and Ciel. www.thenational.ae/sport/uae-sport/al-ahli-deny-fabio-cannavaro-has-been-released

A year ago Cannavaro played in Italy's national squad (which didn't play that well, I admit). You don't want him? I do.
And if you really think Hall / Gorkšs / Connolly will look better than Cannavaro / Materazzi at the centre of our defence...
I don't think they will sign for us. But it's strange how many of you/us are writing off 'ageing italians' simply on the basis that they're Italians...and ageing. Centrebacks don't need to run that much. Just look at Vidic. He's not ageing, but he can't run. So what?...

Those are valid points...
My response (others may have others)
Based on his past and Briatore's past, The fact that they're Italians makes the suspicion these are players Briatore-Paladini are trying to foist on Warnock. (Think past list of Italian players signed by Briatore-Paladini)
I imagine we both agree that any player - even Italian Internationals - should only be signed if Warnock really wants them.
2) Yes aging doesnt mean no good. But this is a player who's gone off to play in the UAE...Not exactly a hotbed of class football.
3) re Wanting to strengthen our defense? Yes indeed. Question is whether these are the best we can get

Possibly Sabas and its good to have some experience , but i rather we bought youth rather than Cannavaro , i must add a fantastic player in his time. For me , rather we go for Naughton , Cauker,Clyne etc and get good quality youth in than going down that route . If we went down you have the youth in place again to get back up not a near 40 year old Cannavaro in the Championship on big wages . just my view though.

Warnock said that centrebacks weren't one of his priorities (that worries me). And yes, the current owners are known for imposing their own players on QPR managers... But even if it's true, in my eyes they're better than nothing - or potentially better than our current centrebacks.

He is slow and rejected by a team in the UAE so I can't see how he can be regarded as good enough for the prem on the strength of that alone. Also, with Materazzi, the same applies and as we've proven before, on more than one occassion, having one ageing Italian footballer in the side usually makes them look poor due to the players around them. I cannot see any of our players being on the same wavelength as a former world cup winning captain unless we put other classy players around him.

Or maybe not, Guess Flavio/Gianni will have to offer a lot of money! Al Ahli dismiss Cannavaro talk June 27, 2011 By ESPNsoccernet staff Dubai-based Al Ahli have denied reports former Italy international Fabio Cannavaro has been released. METRO Fabio Cannavaro fuels QPR transfer speculation after retirement scoff Veteran Italian defender Fabio Cannavaro has fuelled rumours of a move to Premier League newcomers QPR by denying he has any plans to retire The 37-year-old World Cup winner is a free agent after leaving Al-Ahli in Dubai and has been linked with the Rs. Al-Ahli had supposedly offered the 37-year-old a management role but he turned down the offer to continue playing. Cannavaro, who lists Juventus and Real Madrid among his former clubs, has confirmed he is keen to find a new team. ‘I have not yet decided when I will retire,’ said the former Italy captain. The 2006 World Player of the Year would be a welcome addition to Rangers' defence, although wage demands will be the deciding factor in whether or not he joins on at Loftus Road. Former QPR chairman Flavio Briatore is understood to be in favour of fostering a strong Italian influence at the club with Inter defender Marco Materazzi also thought to be a target. The Premier League new boys are yet to make a single signing this summer and will need to move fast so they can begin preparations for the new season, which starts on August 13th. www.metro.co.uk/sport/football/867558-fabio-cannavaro-fuels-qpr-transfer-speculation-after-retirement-scoff

Cannavaro Update: Doesn't mean he's coming to QPR, but seems he IS leaving after allGoal.com - By Ben Somerford - Jun 30, 2011 Italian defender Fabio Cannavaro to leave Al Ahli after Luis Jimenez signingThe picture appears to be clearer in Dubai, with the 2006 Fifa World Player of the Year on his way out as the Red Knights bring in another attacking foreign playerFormer Fifa World Player of the Year Fabio Cannavaro will leave Al Ahli after the Dubai club signed a third foreigner in Chile international Luis Jimenez. Al Ahli told The National an announcement on former Inter and West Ham midfielder Jimenez would be made soon, following on from the signings of Brazilian strike duo Jaja and Grafite. UAE Pro-League rules limit clubs to four foreigners per squad, whom one must come from within the Asian Football Confederation. Therefore, the signing of Jimenez effectively forces 37-year-old Cannavaro out at Al Ahli, despite the club being coy about his future over the past week.Al Ahli chief executive officer Ahmed Khalifa Hamad had told Sport360 over the weekend that Cannavaro was staying with the club following reports he had been released. “Fabio Cannavaro is going nowhere. I don’t know where these reports emerged from, but he has a year left on his contract with us and he is expected to stay with the club,” said Hamad. However, later in the week Hamad appeared to perform a stunning u-turn on the Italian defender's future when he revealed the club's recruitment plans to Gulf News. "We have signed two Brazilians (Grafite and Jaja) and will sign two more foreign players - another foreigner and another for the one Asian player allowance. This is already in process," said Hamad. Cannavaro, who has been linked with newly-promoted Premier League club QPR, made 16 league appearances for Al Ahli during the 2010-11 season when they finished down in eighth. Jimenez, who spent the 2010-11 campaign in Italy on loan at Cesena, is expected to be confirmed on a four-year contract. www.goal.com/en/news/14/asia/2011/06/30/2554053/italian-defender-fabio-cannavaro-to-leave-al-ahli-after-luis
