Bump a year...I remember that..although don't remember it as being "On This (particular) day...Think we were also linked to Charlie George, then at Arsenal...And of course Alan Hudson -then at Chelsea. (Jago looked to the 'bad" boys who were problematic but brilliant - and we could just afford. G-d we were ambitious and forward looking and innovative in those days under Gregory et al... Previously I remember that so well. Luckily we didn't! But it just exemplified the Vision and ambition of Jim Gregory and Gordon Jago PFA's Give Me Football - On This Day, April 13 1973 Queens Park Rangers are interested in signing George Best as Chairman Jim Gregory and manager Gordon Jago discuss a possible transfer in Manchester with Sir Matt Busby and other United officials. ... www.givemefootball.com/premier-league/on-this-day-in-history-april-13-

One of my biggest regrets was going to the Alan Mcdonald Testimonial v a Chelsea team 1990 and sitting front row of Elerslie and having the oppotunity to get George Best who was kitted out in a Rangers kit to sign my program but being only 11 was too nervous to do it and he was right where i was and other kids got him to sign theirs. He played the first half and intruth i just watched him. Glad i went but that missed opportunity always irks me. There is a picture out there of Best that night with Dominic Iorfa of all players ;D

Bump 41 Years ago... And just under a year later: Jan 1, 1974: George Best played his final game for Manchester United - at Loftus Road! It's the match summary from www.itnsource.com/searchresults/[GEORGE BEST'S LAST MAN UT GAME (& Stuart Houston's Man Ut Debut! ) UNITED KINGDOM: SOCCER -- THREE FINE GOALS AS QUEENS PARK RANGES BEAT MANCHESTER UNITED 3 - 0 Story A fine 3 - 0 victory by London club Queens Park Rangers, newcomers to the English First Division, plunged the once mighty Manchester United deeper into trouble today (Tuesday, January 1). Before a big Bank Holiday crowd, Rangers produced some superb attacking football to keep their place among the top half dozen clubs in the First Division. Manchester United, despite the half-million pounds spent by manager Tommy Docherty on new layers, were never in contention. but Docherty's latest signing, left-back Steward Houston signed from London club Brentford for GBP 50,000 last Saturday, at least made a promising debut. Alex Stepney, in the United goal, also had fine game. He had already pulled off several memorable saves when, in the 18th minute, Rangers mounted a quick attack and Givens scored with a fierce drive. The second goal, 16 minutes later, came from a setpiece corner -- Stan Bowles heading the ball into the net. Bowles completed the humiliation of United with an extraordinary goal 20 minutes into the second half. He dummied his way past at least four paralysed United defenders and scored with an angled shot beneath the diving Stepney. Final score: Rangers 3 United 0. SYNOPSIS: A big Bank Holiday crowd tuned up at Loftus Road on Tuesday to see the London club Queens Park Rangers take on Manchester United. Rangers, playing from right to left, are newcomers to the English first division this season. And they soon showed the sort of attacking football that has made them among the top half-dozen clubs. Besides good teamwork, Rangers were also showing plenty of individual flair. Here, it's Gerry Francis making a brilliant run ... and bringing an equally fine save from United goalkeeper Alex Stepheny. But even Stepney's courage couldn't prevent Don Givens putting Rangers in the lead after a quarter of an hour. Rangers went further ahead from a corner on the half-hour. Stan Bowles rose above the Manchester Untied defence to head the goal. In the second half, now, and Queens Park Rangers still on the attack. Though United manager Tommy Docherty has spent a half-million pounds strengthening his team, his entire defence was mesmerised by Stan Bowles who scored another good goal. Final score -- Rangers three, United nil. There were 32,000+ at Loftus Road.
