MARTIN ALLEN RETURNS TO UNDERHILL
Posted on: Wed 23 Mar 2011
Martin Allen, the 45-year-old former manager of Barnet FC when they were in the Conference eight years ago, was reappointed today until the end of the season in a shock move.
Chairman Tony Kleanthous decided to turn to Allen after a 1-0 defeat at Aldershot last night left the Bees in second bottom place in League 2 with eight games to go. He described his action as "the last throw of the dice".
The Chairman added: "It is important that everything possible is done to retain our Football League status and we will support Martin thoroughly in his efforts to turn things round and bring in any new players he feels appropriate. We now have to win five or six of our last eight games and everyone is focused on the task ahead"
Allen met Director of Football Development, Paul Fairclough, who was acting as temporary manager, today to agree the terms of his contract until the end of the season and the players were then told about Allen's return.
Allen, one of the most colourful characters in football, was assistant to Peter Shreeves at Barnet in 2002 and then succeeded him and built a team from scratch that challenged for the play-offs. When Allen left for Brentford, Paul Fairclough took over and took the side to the play-off semi-finals and eventual promotion to The Football League.
A successful player with QPR and West Ham United, Allen was originally assistant manager to Alan Pardew at Reading. He is a member of the Allen footballing dynasty: cousins Paul, Bradley and Clive were players, as was uncle Les, who also managed QPR. Martin's father Dennis played for Reading, Charlton and Bournemouth.
