WINNERS ANNOUNCED
Coventry City's Chris Coleman, Crewe Alexandra's Gudjon Thordarson and Morecambe's Sammy McIlroy were celebrating today after being named Coca-Cola Managers of the Month for February.
Championship
Chris Coleman's side maintained their excellent start to 2009 by winning three of their four league fixtures and remaining unbeaten throughout February. They began the month with an impressive victory against league leaders Wolverhampton Wanderers before securing a solid point away at Burnley. They continued their fine run with back-to-back wins over Birmingham City and Norwich City to an impressive month by moving to within striking distance of the Play-Off places in the Coca-Cola Championship.
Also short-listed for the February award were Gary Johnson of Bristol City, Sean O'Driscoll of Doncaster Rovers and Watford's Brendan Rodgers.
Chris Kamara, chairman of the Coca-Cola Manager of the Month Awards panel, said: "Chris Coleman has enjoyed an unbelievable month at Coventry. To beat the top two in the Championship in the manner in which they did was a fantastic achievement and underlines the progress the club are making. The whole of Coventry is buzzing on the back of their recent results and if the Sky Blues can continue their winning habit there is no reason why they can't muscle in on the Play-Off places come the end of the season."
League 1
Gudjon Thordarson's men hit fine form in February, winning four of their five league fixtures. After a narrow defeat away at Leyton Orient the Railwaymen went on to notch up an incredible four league wins in a row, with victories against Southend United and Huddersfield Town followed by impressive wins over Yeovil Town and Brighton & Hove Albion. Their excellent month culminated in Thordarson's side moving out of the relegation places in Coca-Cola League 1.
Also short-listed for the February award were Graham Turner of Hereford United, Steve Tilson of Southend United and Walsall's Chris Hutchings.
Chris Kamara, chairman of the Coca-Cola Manager of the Month Awards panel, said: "Gudjon Thordarson has had an incredible impact at Crewe since taking charge at the turn of the year. He has transformed the fortunes of the club in a short space of time and this was there for all to see in February, with his side picking up four wins out of five in the month to lift them out of the League 1 relegation zone."
League 2
Sammy McIlroy's men enjoyed a hugely successful February, remaining unbeaten in their seven league fixtures. They began the month with an outstanding home win over league leaders Brentford before going on to register a share of the points against Lincoln City and a win over Chester City. Their form away from Christie Park was equally impressive and included back-to-back victories over Aldershot Town and Grimsby Town to leave the Shrimps in the top half of Coca-Cola League 2 as they head into March.
Also short-listed for the February award were Andy Scott of Brentford, Paul Tisdale of Exeter City and Rochdale's Keith Hill.
Chris Kamara, chairman of the Coca-Cola Manager of the Month Awards panel, said: "Sammy McIlroy continues to work wonders at Morecambe. Given the financial constraints at the club he has one of the smallest squads in League 2 so for them to have played seven games in the month against some tough opposition and remained unbeaten is testament to his skill as a manager."
